Apple users unlikely to ditch App Store for cheaper alternatives, analyst saysQuestion. What are some of the headwinds that Apple must face, let’s say over the next 12 months? This story indicates that the intrusion of outside apps into Apples App Store is not a big thing, but what are some of the problems that are on the horizon that are a big thing? Production capacity and the availability of components? Economic recession and the publics ability to afford high end products? Any ideas?

Barrons article names Apple as a top pick for 2023. This is from News+, so not sure if a link would post properly

Aren’t wearables, if they are also manufactured in China, subject to the same restraints as iPhone? The services sector is likely dependent on peoples ability/willingness to take on additional monthly expenditures during a downturn in the economy. Also I didn’t notice any mention about the Mac line. I truly hope that he’s correct, but maybe I’ve overlooked something.

Really don't like the new System Settings on my iMac. Just filled with clutter. Getting as bad as the phones which have literally pages of settings. I can't believe this clutter and "choice" look which is totally gross and ugly is something Apple can't improve upon. Nordstorms's did the same thing with their shopping app for the Rack. They went from about 8 different categories of men's clothes to literally over 100. Evidently lots of meaningless choices is the way to market to the younger gen. Hard to believe.

More China obsession. There are all kinds of reports about AirPods shifting to and already being built in Vietnam.

But the real question is why is the iPhone, Apples main product, still being made in China? Wouldn't you expect it to be the same reason: "Perhaps it is because Foxconn is the largest electronics manufacturer in the world, and it has the ability to produce large quantities of airpods pro quickly and efficiently." Like semiconductor manufacturing, it's not just about the labor costs. There's also the scale, and the know-how. And assembly also has the variable of where all the parts are coming from. Apple has been moving more iPhone manufacturing/assembly to be in other countries. Recent stories said 25-30% are made elsewhere, but I don't know if that was for final assembly, or the sum of all the parts. These stories were talking about the push to doing more assembly in India, and how over the next year or three this would get to something more, like 40%. It's not easy or quick to make big changes. This isn't just where a shirt that sells 100 units a month is manufactured, with lots of places having the ability and knowledge. It's going to take time, and the story line or current mix is not going to change on the daily or weekly basis.

But the real question is why is the iPhone, Apples main product, still being made in China? Dave, Anyone asking that question must consider the complexity of what's being assembled and how the items that are being assembled show up on time to support assembly. Obviously, if an iPhone contains 178 individual parts, a complete assembly can't be accomplished if one part is missing. Where that part fits in the assembly process determines how much assembly can be done, if any, while waiting for that one part. I did a quick search for the basics and have some of the numbers below in items 1-5. Item #5 is the oldest listed and it's information from from iPhone 6. After only a cursory overview, I think it's obvious that the iPhone is still being made in China because, at this time, there is no other country that can duplicate what China has done, and is doing, to support iPhone production.================== 1. Apple's ubiquitous smartphone contains a variety of metals, and utilizes 75 of the 118 elements found in the periodic table. Aluminum is the most dominant, comprising about 24 percent of an iPhone. Nov 30, 2022
2. Apple shipped 240 million iPhones in 2021 alone. Oct 2022
3. As it stands, Chinese contractors produce more than 90% of Apple products, including an estimated 98% of iPhones. Sept 2022
4. However, while China might offer the skill quantity Apple is after, the iPhone hosts too many components to mention (there are around 178 of them if you were curious), all of them manufactured in a different country. Aug 2022

Aug 2022 Where is that quote from? I don't understand the "all of them manufactured in a different country" part of it. The link you included had info for the iPhone 6, which had 14 parts from the US. That was a lot more than my wild guess would have been. I also don't understand the whole thing, as I believe at least some iPhones are being assembled in India. Maybe that's only pre-14's, but it's still something. Nice article over on sfgate of a couple being saved after a car crash down a cliff near LA, outside of cell service, due to their iPhone 14. www.sfgate.com/california/article/couple-survive-crash-with-iphone-17661097.php

Aug 2022 Where is that quote from? I don't understand the "all of them manufactured in a different country" part of it. The quote was from Where Are iPhones Manufactured: How Much Do You Really Know?I thought these two comments were very important to understand why the iPhone is "still being made in China": In an MSNBC interview from 2018, Cook stated that “We are building things in the United States and it’s not true that the iPhone isn’t built in the United States… There are components of the iPhone built in the United States. The glass is from Kentucky. Many chips, silicon chips, are made from all over the United States.”
Cook also stated in another interview that there is still ‘confusion about China’: “The popular conception is that companies come to China because of low labor costs. I’m not sure what part of China they go to, but the truth is China stopped being a low-labor-cost country many years ago. And that is not the reason to come to China from a supply point of view. The reason is because of the skill, and the quantity of skill in one location and the type of skill it is.”

Hey Duckpins, totally agree - Was trying to set up a new MBP for some older friends and couldn't find some regular Pref settings that am used to. System Preferences is a Hot Mess! Why take perfectly decent UI and and change it something unrecognizable and move a bunch of crucial functions off to some obscure spot!? 😱
