Not a bad day, all things considered. At one point we were only 10 cents away from the previous day’s closing price. Maybe this was the first day of consolidation.

Reno has a MS campus that deals with business subscriptions, and we have a friend who works there. One of the other times MS had layoffs in the last decade or so, he said that was just how MS worked, that they culled a certain amount of people each year, normally at review time.
I remember reading about MS doing this a couple different times. I don't know the cycle, and haven't chatted with our friend about it in a while, but this isn't altogether unexpected. Plus it makes a better story, tacking it on to "tech layoffs" in general.
Someone who follows MS closer would have a better idea. At the same time, I was happy to see that MS beat earnings, and then realized that MS just hasn't been much of a competitor to Apple in a while, at least in the most important markets. They are still in the field, and an important player, but much less of a "competitor" than back in the day.
