Good morning. Our pre-market is green this morning at +0.26% at this moment.
So what will today’s economic data look like and how will Mr. Market react?

So, why is this true and how did we get here? My take is that when the baby boomer generation started there were more job applicants then there were job openings which generated a great deal of competition among us to get and keep a position. And so we were productive and took pride in our position. I once worked for an employer that was top rated and when employees started to complain about how the company was being run they were informed that they could quit at anytime and there were dozens of applicants ready and waiting to take their place, and it was true. Of course we baby boomers were also big consumers which helped fuel the economy and its expansion. But now as those trained and experienced baby boomers are leaving the workforce they are being replaced by the inexperienced and uncaring and because of the smaller number of applicants available there is very little competition among them. So now when they complain to their employer the employer will bow to their concerns. The tables have turned and it is not good, for employers or employees. But America is not the only nation in the world being faced with a dwindling workforce. China for example is in far worse shape than we are, partly because of their forced one child policy from 40 years ago. And their child of choice were boys. They may be past the point of return. I spotted something interesting a few days ago, maybe a glimpse into the future. There was some utility work being done along a road where there was only enough room for one lane of traffic at a time. Normally there would be a couple of flag men, sorry that should be flag persons, directing traffic but instead there were two machines with a barrier arm and traffic lights to control who could enter the available lane. And they were connected by radio for coordination. No taking breaks or lunches or neglecting their duties as they check their phone. And they will work 24/7.

I think every generation thinks the ones coming after them don’t measure up. I am a boomer, and my parents thought they worked harder than us, and so on. Now lots of boomers are saying the same thing about those coming after them. In all the hiring I have done, I have not observed this phenomena at all. All kinds of new hires right out of school who worked their asses off and were great contributors right off the bat.

Yes each generation looks through the lens of experience and wisdom seeing the dangers and shortcomings of each new generation. So, what do you think is the reasoning behind this statement from the story? Is this person simply painting with a broad brush?

Is this person simply painting with a broad brush? Yes and No. The primacy of the individual is a fundamental value that is exalted as a bedrock of American values from an early age. However, one of the values that is at the heart American culture, especially through the medium of team sports, is the power of joint motivation driving cooperative action. Ask any coach, and they will tell you that success is driven by a delicate balance between individual performance and teamwork.
