Good morning. I see red in this morning’s pre-market at -0.36% at this moment.

Well, tomorrow Mr. Fed speaks and Mr. Market will listen and react. By the movement in the market it looks like everyone is expecting a .25% announcement. But it wouldn’t be the first time the market has been fooled. I’m guessing that this will be a good week.

Cult of Mac has Why iPhone is winning the global smartphone battle. Mac Rumors has Deals: M1 iMacs Available for $199 Off on Amazon, Starting at Record Low Price of $1,099.99. We bought one as soon they were available, having delayed replacing our old iMac in order to get on the new Apple technology train. We have been happy with it, but there were some undisclosed limitations. For example, it was not obvious, nor mentioned at the Apple Store, that it was not possible to hook up our CD-ROM drive to the unit, due to hardware and software limitations. I still have a large number of music CDs that I had not yet loaded on our previous iMac, and have had to rely the kindness of our local son to transfer them onto thumb drives in order to get them on the new iMac. Needless to say this has been a less efficient process than I was expecting, in addition to the imposition on our son.

When everyone expects something is the time the market can move the most.
I would imagine a .25% increase and nothing really out of the ordinary in wording, if the FED wants to push things the most. A .25% increase and then slightly bullish/dovish wording doesn't help their cause.
I don't think they are ready to flip, even if many people in the market think they should. But on that maybe 5-10% chance that they are ready, the thing to do would be to not have an increase, and then be flat or just slightly hawkish in their wording. That would give them the most flexibility.
At least that is what it seems should be their options, from a game theory and mass psychology point of view. What they actually do, especially since they are made up of a group of people, is a different story.

usually the Fed likes to spook the market. Today the market seems on firm footing, but betting against the Fed saying something the market does not like...Seattle Slew, 2 to 1. Mortgage the house! Tomorrow will be a long time. Our favorite fruit is showing a max pain valley between 160-65 for next week's calls. Someone is optimistic. But with the banking crises and now the Fed Speak, Big brother has the hatchet.

When we visited last, this was my dad's problem too, that they no longer had a machine with a CD drive. We bought an external off of Amazon for something like $22, cheap enough that I was tempted to buy one for myself. It arrived after we left, but apparently it hooked up fine and worked. It's my understanding that he hooked it up to his M1 iMac, and not the the 27" i5 iMac, but I can check. I still occasionally use an external USB drive on my 27" i5 iMac to grab music off of a CD, though I haven't tried it since updating to Ventura last week.

Looks like the close is the highest high since back in Sept. This means Apple is up and away with 163-169-175 next.

I am sure because we had to wait an extra several weeks past the promised date for it to arrive. That is one of the things that made it particularly annoying to find out that it did not fully meet our needs. I will admit that we never asked about about our need for a CD-ROM drive attachment, as it had been years since we had run into that issue. Perhaps Apple received enough complaints to solve the problem in a later release.

I'm surprised to learn this about hooking a CD-ROM drive to an iMac since I see two different web pages that deal with hooking up a CD-ROM to a late model Mac. The second link only mentions MacBooks...so can one connect a CD-ROM to a MacBook but not an iMac? That would be strange. external cd/dvd drive for M1 iMacThe best CD/DVD drives for Mac 2023: keep those discs spinningNOTE: Also see this info about an Apple Super Drive: Apple USB SuperDriveOverview - The sleek, compact USB SuperDrive. • Everything you need in an optical drive. Whether you’re at the office or on the road, you can play and burn both CDs and DVDs with the Apple USB SuperDrive. It’s perfect when you want to watch a DVD movie, install software, create backup discs, and more. • Take it anywhere. Only slightly bigger than a CD case, the Apple USB SuperDrive slips easily into your travel bag when you hit the road and takes up little space on your desk or tray table when you’re working. • The essence of simplicity. You’ll never have to worry about lost cables with the Apple USB SuperDrive. It connects to your Mac* with a single USB Type-A cable that’s built into the SuperDrive. There’s no separate power adapter, and it works whether your Mac is plugged in or running on battery power.

Again…this was the very first release of the M1 iMac. We took it back to the Apple Store to make sure that we understood the problem; they confirmed the situation, and offered no solution to the problem. Perhaps future models resolved it.
We still have the unit; we are otherwise quite happy with it.

We still have the unit; we are otherwise quite happy with it. My parents iMac is the same one. They might have even picked it up at Costco while you were still waiting for your special order. I think you got more than the default memory, or a larger SSD? Either way, the timing was close. You should try it again, now that you have updated the OS a few times. It's quite possible that, if SW related, it works now. Back in the much earlier days of OS X, at first the supported internal optical drives were really limited, and so the trick was finding an OEM one that Apple had added support. Especially with what Apple at the time called Superdrives, ones capable of writing DVDs. Anyways, support got much wider at some point, maybe around 10.6. But things happen, and there very well could have been some OS releases that didn't support everything. If the latest and greatest OS still doesn't support it for you, consider buying a new optical drive. I'm sure Apple sells one, but there are also ones on Amazon in the ~$25 range that work fine. I think your machine is all USB-C, so make sure the cabling is right, or use an adapter if the drive cable uses a different version of USB. (EDIT: Looks like there are probably some problems out there, especially on older OS's, of not having new M capable code. And then it looks like some of the talk is on a bunch of normal errors, like a bad connection from a dirty port, using a non-powered hub when the drive needs power, having the disc upside down (or the drive upside down so you think it's right). I'm sure you tried all of this stuff, but some people don't. There's some Apple support discussions, like discussions.apple.com/thread/253130892 and discussions.apple.com/thread/253143449I'd run all the updates and try it again. And if still not, consider a new drive. If yours uses an old driver (or whatever the proper term is on OS X) that hasn't been updated to run on the M series chip, that could be it. Read reviews and make sure something you want to buy works on an M series Mac)

Other World Computing has a nice selection of CD/DVD/Blueray drives. But you may only need some disc burning software, which was all that I needed for my M1 MacMini.

I do not know how to make this any clearer. Apple employees confirmed that there was no way to hook up our external CD-ROM drive to the unit AND MAKE IT WORK, due to both hardware and software limitations. We had already gone through the data conversion of our user configs and decided not to start all over again with a different model. Perhaps future upgrades to the M1 line resolved the issues, whether hardware or software.
