Thanks for the open Benoir, I had to look up "Antipodes". Hope all is good down under. Well, from where I’m standing, you’re the one that appears to be ‘down under’!! I am enjoying a week AU$. Perfect timing with AAPL dividend having just arrived today. However, I’m not likely to buy AAPL @ 0.64 AUDUSD xrate. Great time to visit for anyone based in USD. Perfect this time of the year in the sub-tropics, always hot in the tropics and okay down the southern end, if you like it a little damp and cooler.

Erik Woodring of Morgan Stanley. stocks.apple.com/AOhKqMDx9SuWKcxNAfaCGKgAdditionally, the analysts noted that while demand for the Mac and iPad are still "challenged," the firm is encouraged that the September quarter is likely to see growth in the "right places," with year-over-year growth in the iPhone, an acceleration in Services revenue and gross margin tailwinds. "As a result, we see 5% upside to Street EPS estimates in [fiscal 2024], and expect the stock to outperform as growth accelerates, margins expand [year-over-year], and consensus estimates move higher," the analysts added.

I’m a first time thread starter… Hope I’ve done this right. Thanks for starting the daily thread benoir! On the backside....or flip side....I've just been looking around trying to see about spam prevention on the site. Hence the red stars, and going through a new account creation. Proboards does ok, and we've only been getting slightly more than one spam account per month over the past 2 years. And even those accounts aren't really a problem, normally just with one and sometimes two spam messages, so it's not like each one is flooding us with thousands of messages. It wouldn't take much to automatically separate them, in their current form. So far 90+% of the time their accounts are from outside of North America (uh oh, that would flag yours too), and have at least 3 trailing numbers on their account (Whew, you're safe). We have so few accounts outside of North America that a combination filter that used that would really narrow it down, and though some usernames like Since1984 and artman1033 would trigger part of the search, they wouldn't match both halves. (EDIT: Just to be more correct and complete, ProBoards doesn't currently have a way to do this, to ban certain things at registration. They do have a way to ban by IP, or even broad IP range. So if we set up a wide range of banning all IPs from Thailand (which could be sidestepped by using a VPN that gave an IP from somewhere else), then it would also temporarily ban anyone who was visiting Thailand and trying to visit the site (again, if not using a VPN that changed their IP). There's actually a message on their support page right now of slightly the opposite, of someone being banned while using a VPN because the VPN IPs are on the site's banned list. This is probably more details than 95% of readers want, but I'm including it anyway since I had to dig for a while to get this info) Looking at our list of banned users, that would take care of 16 of the 28 from the last ~2 years. And tweaking that slightly to search for the trailing numbers on the email address instead of the username would up it even more, likely with no false positives. Putting the accounts into a quarantine instead of just disallowing them would let in any legitimate accounts, like if Since1984 had a matching email and was trying to create an account while visiting Paris. Sadly, ProBoards doesn't allow any of this. The account creation is on their end. It goes through a reCAPCHA (click on the motorcycle), and requires an email address that they send long text string to that you have to paste back in. It might be enough to stop a lot of simple bots, but a human can do it. I think the "spammers" that have visited us lately are paid to create links to a site to help raise its ratings in search results. And the last few ones have made a simple late post, and then come back hours or days later to edit the post to have a whole different content, and include those links. The latest ones have been to mls (not major league soccer) d _ EV. It looks like a small app or site developer. But if you start worrying about the legitimacy of part of the process, who knows if the site and company are valid, or if it is grabbing info behind the scenes or trying to infect visitors with stuff. I'm not a security nut, but if I was putting a conspiracy theory together, there's times where I could see it with certain sites, including cheap storefronts and cheap electronics (is that underpriced doorbell cam off of temu really a hack into your network and privacy? News at 11). Anyways, long story short, we have a manageable amount of spam accounts being occasionally created, but Proboards mostly doesn't have a way to avoid the current levels. We could easily change it to need a moderator approval for new accounts, which wouldn't be a big deal since we currently have a great group of moderators. But since this site historically went through a problem of not approving new accounts for years while the admin was away, we'd prefer to avoid this. OTOH, if today we got 10 new spam accounts that each posted 100 spam messages, this would be the quick and easy change. "And now you know...the rest of the story" Thanks everyone. Remember that if you don't post, try to log in once in a while and join the conversation. Aim for at least once a month, but even once a quarter would be a great goal. We have 10x and sometimes even 20x the guest viewers as we do users that are logged in. Posting helps get more ideas out there and keeps the site going. And like I wrote the other day, starting September 1st we have 6 months of ad-free viewing lined up. But you have to be logged in to enjoy it. Log in today, or create an account if you don't yet have one. It only takes a couple minutes to create an account. If having trouble deciding on an account name, there are currently no accounts with 'stock' in their name. One last thing. I'd like it if everyone would think of ways that we can grow this site. We don't need to post about it today, but keep the idea in the back of your head, and let's talk about it soon. Thanks!

Maybe make it into an app as well? Possibly Pilfer people in the reddit apple forums or post in same? Give away 100,000 a month in a drawing?

500 after the close for NVDA? If so all the AI stocks should see the tide rising. Apple today is making me wonder? Maybe the rebalance is done? Amazing bounce of this low or interim low!

Posting to see if this situation is just me, or everyone else also.
Do you get logged out quickly after logging in? I haven’t timed it. Probably 1 hour is the longest I can remain logged in when viewing on an iPhone. To read the forum logged in, I log in nearly every time I visit the site (3-8 times daily around breaks in the day). No other forum I use has this behavior. It doesn’t bother me but I get lazy and just read as a guest which doesn’t help the moderators gauge members vs guests. Anyway, I haven’t seen that mentioned previously so maybe it’s just me (content blockers, etc.).

I happily buy Apple chargers directly from Apple. Worth the price premium it costs. Too many articles about house fires due to electrical charging of lithium or other newer chemistry batteries. Thanks for the article.

The US Supreme Court let Apple keep its App Store payment rules in place for the time being, rejecting an Epic Games request that would have let developers start directing iPhone users to other purchasing options. From a report:
Justice Elena Kagan said she wouldn't let a federal appeals court decision take effect immediately, as Epic had sought. The 9th US Circuit Court of Appeals said earlier this year that Apple violated California's Unfair Competition Law by limiting the ability of developers to communicate about alternative payment systems, including purchases through the Epic Games Store.
Kagan, who gave no explanation, is the justice assigned to handle emergency matters from the San Francisco-based 9th Circuit. Kagan's rejection of Epic means Apple will get a reprieve from the 9th Circuit ruling, though perhaps only a temporary one. The appeals court put its decision on hold to give Apple time to file a Supreme Court appeal later this year, but the ruling will kick in if the justices refuse to hear the case.

Grrrr I can't believe that article was written by a "senior reporter". It had all the writing style of an ad site. It didn't link to the original Apple article so it's hard to know how out of context it was, but at the end the article finally used quotes: So just like anything electrical, don't put it in a place where there is no airflow, like under a pillow of blanket. And don't sleep on top of it while it's charging. What's this "common sense" it speaks of???

No other forum I use has this behavior. It doesn’t bother me but I get lazy and just read as a guest which doesn’t help the moderators gauge members vs guests. Anyway, I haven’t seen that mentioned previously so maybe it’s just me (content blockers, etc.). On my Mac it stays logged in on proboards forever. I've never had an issue with it, though I heard from another moderator that he was occasionally logged out. I believe that was on his Mac and not his iPad. On my iPhone, it depends. This year I used the iPhone on this site during ski season and when on vacation, and I paid a bit more attention. It logs me out a lot. Luckily logging back in is easy since it can use FaceID to put in the info...except that isn't compatible with ski goggles. I believe there was one time that it went a day and a half staying logged in. Mostly it was about a day. If I get a chance sometime I will check the support pages and see if they have some info or advice. And for me this is just on Safari, instead of using a proboards app (if that exists). FWIW, most places do a good job of remembering a user, especially if you click a checkbox that say to remember me. One place that doesn't is Raleys, a grocery store based in the sf bay area the also has Nob Hill and Bel Air. You have to go to their website to click digital coupons. Nearly every time I go there, it starts the process like it knows me, and then gives errors saying it doesn't, and then I have to log in again. Something is messed up. I don't know how these work, but thinking about it it seems like maybe they are saving it on the client instead of the server, and probably using some sort of function to grab the date/time to see how long it has been. I'd bet that they are doing something that would be browser specific (there used to be whole books on Netscape and IE specific functions and options), though it's also possible there is lag or something else that is hitting their error code with the iPhone. Either way, something that should be fairly low tech (ie has it been less than 90 days?) is failing. And in this day and age where we are so used to technology things just working (hey, they should), even having to log in again can be a bit annoying. Ah well. Time to get the trash cans out. We don't have that automated yet.
