This really shouldn't be a surprise. Perhaps I should come back tomorrow on the 26th, but that's a Tuesday and I'll be in the hospital then. I'm so confused . . . 🤔

Sometimes it would be nice to know Apple's reasoning behind things. Like if there is a limited supply of those 5x lenses this year, so they really can't put them in all of the Pros this year. While I don't pine for a tiny original iPhone form factor, I do prefer the size of the normal vs Plus size. I'd like to see the Pro and Pro Max have the same features except screen size, battery size, and weight, even if it meant the price differential was less. Maybe that will happen by next year, but Apple has had a few times where they've made the Max a little bit better. We're happy with our 14's and 14 pro, but I imagine we'll upgrade at least one of them next year. And if there aren't really any downsides (weight differential is now less) to the Pro, we'll probably go that way. (EDIT: Duckpins, FWIW I have the same problem of trying to pull an iPhone out of my jeans pocket while sitting. I try not to do that, and if I do I am normally driving a kid somewhere and can hand them the iPhone. I think even an old tiny flip phone would have the same problem. Shorts often don't have that problem since often their pocket openings are more to the side, and the material isn't as tough. But jeans just don't work well for that, unless I was going with painter jeans and using a different pocket)

TSLA chart looks bad as well but Sept will end shortly. Not impressed by the Titanium ads. I remember when Titanium tennis rackets were the rage.

"iPhone 15 demand continues to outpace supply, with lead times for all iPhone 15 models ahead of the iPhone 14 cycle and lead times for the Pro/Pro Max at record highs reflecting the success of the new, lighter form factor, bezel-less display, 5x optical zoom, and action button as the key new features driving early upgrades for the iPhone 15."
So a bezel less display drove someone to upgrade?

There's a couple articles on CNN of the general economy that seem important. The first is of winter heating costs. Winter expected to be costlier for those who heat with oil. But natural gas heat users will finally get a break.NG is down so it says the nearly 50% of us households heating with that will have ~7% lowers costs. But heating oil is up, with costs expected to be up nearly 9%, though only a small number of people use this. It also lists propane and electricity. The bigger thing here is the total cost, with NG being by far the cheapest, and heating oil by far the most expensive. Given the ~$2300 heating oil total, the price is up around $200 for the season. That's a lot...but not economy changing when comparing to the costs of housing, cars, etc. We'll probably do 50% of our heating this year with wood backing off from the 8 cords a year for 100% heating that we did for a few years. Around here it's hard to put a dollar cost on that, since tree services are now giving away bucked wood dumped off right where you want it, and the house project 2 doors down just trucked off logs to the dump. With firewood heating you 3 times, as long as it's a hobby and I don't put a dollar figure on my time, or consider it an exercise program, it comes out fine. Next up is consumer spending Consumers are still spending on nice things, if they’re on trendThis part seemed fitting for a comparison to Apple: And a last one that I think most of us here understand, but it's good to be reminded of once in a while. The title is a bit provocative, but the text seems important since he made big mistakes and now even wrote "The missing billionaires" about it: The very rich are often bad investors. Here’s whyAnd there's a little blurb at the bottom that I read this weekend, of 2 important minerals not being exported from China last month. We'll have to see where that goes, but it sounds like there are alternate locations and alternate minerals.

So a bezel less display drove someone to upgrade? I think Apple must have heard that some people wanted a smaller iPhone A lot of this is just silly. Most people don't go out and buy a new car because its fenders are more sleek than last year's model. But put it all together, maybe the whole thing looks more modern or stylish in whatever way is considered stylish at the time, but something about power, gas mileage, safety features, fun features, and various other specs, some that are important to some people while others that are important to others. And then add in that the majority of new car buyers of mass produced cars (Ferrari has to be a different set of characteristics) are doing so because they feel they need a new car, instead of not just that the specs on the new model catch their eye. Isn't that how many smartphone buyers are. Especially within iOS. It's got to be at least 75% that already feel it is time to upgrade, and so no matter what Apple came out with, they'd be likely to buy. At least that is my feeling on it. A bunch of people here were ordering new iPhones since ordering came available. Had you already pretty much decided that it was going to be time to get a new iPhone, back weeks or more before Apple showed off the new specs? Or was there something with the new 15 series iPhones that really caught your attention and got you to upgrade when you weren't really planning on it?

Here is an anecdote that lines up with various articles about iPhone 15 demand being surprisingly strong. Not a single iPhone 15 Pro config, including the Max is available at my local Apple Store. And there is only one config of the base model available.

Is this different than the past?

I read a story on the weekend that lead times are setting records in several countries. Wait times have never been this long. EDIT - more below. Record iPhone lead times
Emphasis mine

So a bezel less display drove someone to upgrade? The difference in bezel is so minor that you have to carefully look for it in side to sides. Yes, it’s “nicer” but barely noticeable if at all. Reviews trying to make this into much of a “thing” seem silly. Just as silly as other reviews that mention omg fingerprints showing up on the edges. (As if we haven’t seen this nonsense before). “Lighter” does make a difference, as does overall speed, and 120hz refresh on the screen (I went from a 12 Pro to a 15 Pro). Oh, and the Dynamic Island rocks. I’m 1000% satisfied. This is the slickest, fastest, smoothest iPhone experience for me. It feels pretty much “perfect” in every way. It’s just begging me to do things with it that can “push” it. I haven’t found anything yet that does. USB-C also rocks. Just for fun (and to have a non-iCloud backup), I used the Finder to back it up over a fast cable (250GB final backup file size) and it took roughly half an hour, fantastic. Over lighting it would have taken … 10 hours? (10 Gbps vs 480 Mbps) Lightning cable transfer speeds have always been atrocious and this fixed it. (Sure 20 Gbps would have been even better, but this is fine) Plus, you can record direct to an external SSD or thumb drive. Everything about faster data transfer is better for anyone who knows how to use it. Then the other aspects: easy fast charging from laptop power cables; use the C cables you already have. Plug into a display or TV for direct mirroring. Reverse charge to other devices. It’s all a win.

The whole fingerprint thing is a non-issue for most people ... because they put their phone into a case anyway. Fingerprints on the screen is an issue for all phones, but a quick wipe now and then fixes that instantly. I'd guess that it's the best iPhone ever, but that's always the case for the newest models. Why would Apple make a lesser iPhone a year later??? (other than those few exceptions when they are filling a gap in their offerings a la the SE models). Also, I've found that a new out of the box iPhone always performs a lot better than a few weeks/months later after it's been loaded down with apps, all sorts of background stuff running, and lots of stuff in memory. This even applies to me when I simply completely duplicate my old iPhone into my new one. It could also be a human thing, maybe it seems faster at first (because it is), but then I get used to it and it doesn't seem faster anymore? I saw someone post a video of his iPhone plugged into a USB-C hub, with an external monitor connected, an external SSD connected, an ethernet adapter connected, and an external keyboard ... everything was functional and the iPhone display was mirrored on the external monitor! Is the raw 250GB backup from finder useful at all for restoring to the iPhone if necessary? [EDIT: This isn't the video I saw, but it is similar - www.youtube.com/watch?v=3RWQ_pmIRTo]

This is probably it, that we get used to the faster speed pretty quickly, especially if not jumping back and forth to the old one. Back with overclocking the 6100, the magic number for feeling a difference was said to be 10%. But most chips in most conditions/temperatures would allow up to a 20% overclock. I think I was able to run my 60Mhz machine at 76 or 78, and my 66Mhz machine might have made it up to 84Mhz, all with the clip on kit from Other World Computing. Good to hear the new ones are giving very noticeable improvements, especially for those moving from a couple generations ago.

The raw 250GB backup in the Finder “is” a way to restore the iPhone as of that backup date. (It’s therefore not as up-to-date necessarily as an iCloud backup would be). I’ve never used iCloud to backup a iPhone, always thinking of “privacy”, but maybe it’s time to stop thinking that way.
The thing ls you’d lose most from having your phone lost or stolen and not having a completely current backup would be photos, and Messages content. (Trying hard to think of something else. Email is all server based, etc)
However, both of those would be ameliorated by turning on iCloud Photos and Messages in iCloud (with added cross/device benefits for both), but I haven’t done those yet, either.
For moving from an old phone into a new, QuickStart direct transfer seems best rather than iCloud (after doing some reading of Gruber’s thoughts on Daring Fireball), in terms of max retention of cached data for the apps etc. The only downside is having the old phone offline but, given my large transfer still only taking a couple of hours wirelessly - not a big deal. In the future, this will be a USBC-USBC cabled transfer and it would be several times faster.
