eh, haven't we known about these 'eye-watering' numbers for a while now? Those services margins don't come from thin air.

eh, haven't we known about these 'eye-watering' numbers for a while now? Those services margins don't come from thin air. Now that is impressive! But from one of the stories a week or more ago, it's really more akin to a profit sharing strategy. Maybe it is upfront instead of some revenue sharing like a 30% cut, but it is probably based on a pretty good estimate, likely based on the past year. It is impressive how much money is in search. I still think that there is a potential foothold in here, if the company was willing to give up some money. Privacy protection (my understanding is that this is what Duck Duck Go is pushing) is tempting, but it is a nebulous item that is hard to put a value on. But "we donate 10% of any profits to the Children's hospital, Cancer Research, the Red Cross, and Food Banks across the world" sounds a bit more catchy. And I bet there is even room for the "free upsale", letting people put in just a little info to get to guide where their "donations" go, or the Plus version of letting it save more info (to get higher paying targeted ads) so that they can donate even more (because they make more) and to let the user fully pick where the donations go. There's got to be some area here, just as there is some to "make money", like those of us that opted in to have an ad banner at the bottom of our screen 25 years ago, feeling it wouldn't bug us but it would make a little money. Or crypto mining. Or radio telescope data mining. On Safari it is excessively easy to switch search engines. I just clicked on Settings, then the Search tab, and the dropdown menu gave me 5 choices. I don't see an easy way to pick something else, and I don't know what Ecosia is, but it was pretty intuitive and quick to switch to DuckDuckGo, and I think the setup assistant has asked for years what search engine you want to use, probably on both MacOS and iOS. Google might be the default, but if Apple put in code to randomize the default for every thousandth use (hundredth of a second divided by 6?), I wonder how different the final selection would be? That's the big question. How much of it is Google buying the default spot, and how much of it is Google being the choice that most people choose to make? But it happens everywhere, in varying ways.

To be fair, I understood the comment to be TO business insider, not to you! Also, as far as I can recall, there's a "thing" on social media to make fun of BI as never coming up with anything new and just regurgitating what everyone else in the business media has already researched. What makes it particularly funny is that BI paywalls all their stuff while others (like CNBC, etc) offer some free content and some paywalled content.
