Looks like Cyber Monday beat expectations, estimated at $12.4B Cyber Monday rings in $12.4 billion in sales as consumers hunt for bargainsWhat did you buy over the weekend or on Monday? We picked up a few odds and ends, partly boring things but sometimes getting a push to buy something we've meant to get. I picked up a better tile saw at HD. Somehow with all of our various earbuds/airpods/headphones we are short a pair of noise canceling ones for flights, so I got a pair of the 300 series from monoprice that was rated as well as ones 10x their price by consumer reports. And swinging by Costco this weekend, among other things we picked up gingerbread house kits for the kids, which they all had fun decorating last night. There were a few things I was considering, like another battery backup, a newer automatic vacuum, or a newer TV. But I just wasn't feeling it this time around. Two public service announcements. If you have nicely appreciated stock, and want to make it easy to make donations from it, consider setting up a Donor Advised Fund. It helps maximize the tax benefits and thus the reach of your donations, while not having many downsides (for me that is limited investment choices once funds are in the DAF, a time delay and minimum value on donations (so not right for making a $50 donation while at a school event), and a small 0.6% annual fee (offset by account appreciation)). If you have questions, I'm happy to answer. The other is that Covid is out there, and is still more than annoying. Our doctor advised me to get the TDAP and Flu shots, but I didn't find out until later that she hadn't mentioned getting a recent Covid shot since they didn't have them at the office. My last covid vaccine was nearly a year ago, and I don't think I ever had the sickness. But 12 days ago I came down with symptoms, and after a day and a half of occasional chills I decided to use a test. Since then it hasn't been that terrible, but a week and a half of coughing, sometimes coughing so much I thought I would throw up, just isn't fun. If you haven't had a recent vaccine or been sick with it recently, consider getting it. I'm normally not one to bother getting the Flu vaccine since I don't get sick very often or get very sick. While this hasn't laid me up in bed for 2 weeks, it's not been great, and I'd rather have gotten the recent vaccine on my schedule and felt bad for a day than feeling bad for 2 weeks. We all make our own decisions and have our own priorities. But if you've been meaning to get a recent shot but been lagging a bit, I'd suggest making it happen.

"Trust" and reliance is a interesting thing: Google apologizes after map led drivers down dirt path into the desertMost of us are old enough that we have used paper maps for at least a decade of our driving time. I've personally picked out some of those dirt roads to go on, in the right vehicle, whether it was a Gilroy to I-5 route when 152 was bumper to bumper on a holiday trip (wife wasn't happy on that one, since my son was about 6 months old), or across a 60 mile stretch in Eastern Oregon. I do think there should be some personal responsibility there, and that blaming GPS directions for "thousands of dollars in damage" or going off a bridge that is out just isn't right. OTOH, "kids these days" are just used to using GPS directions to get somewhere (even if Mark tries to train his kids). The question is what happens in the not too distant future when more vehicles are self-driving? Along with picking a speed, deciding a "safe speed for the conditions", and deciding what to do with a deer or car in your lane, or a yellow light, it will also have to decide what to do when the primary route is closed. This is more of a problem when out in the country, with limited road choices. About 2 years ago, I saved about 2 hours after the highway was shut down due to an accident, by taking a dirt road....with snow on it, in the minivan. But I had driven those roads a time or two before, and stopped to talk to a local when something didn't look right, so knew what I was getting into. And after talking with him, he let me know the cable across the road was just dummy locked, and that I could move it and drive through as long as I put it back up. It worked great. But it stopped others coming through, and more importantly it should have stopped any GPS routes from using it, if they had been updated in the past 5-10 years since the cable was added. Self-driving will give some interesting cases, just as it does now with some overly relying on it. (EDIT: FWIW the same story is at www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2023/11/28/google-maps-desert-detour-california-vegas-formula-one/ but with links. The TikTok video is pretty lame and not worth it, aside from showing the gravel road through the sagebrush was narrow, and that lots of people tried it. "Damage" was probably brush "pin striping", or maybe something when trying to turn around, but if nearly bumper to bumper there shouldn't be any rock protrusion that would surprise you. But yea, not a good route choice for the Tesla shown on a tow truck, though I'd be curious to know what was bad (article said they were in a "Toyota SUV", but screen video shows an Audi). If I was down in Vegas, I'd be off exploring this trail today, though maybe I need to see about exploring the back route into Bodie that we had to give up on when there was too much mud and snow on the ground.)

As Reported by MacRumors.com and The WaPo there seems to be deliberate Misinformation out and about regards the working of "NameDrop" in IOS 17. They seem to imply that two iPhones in close proximity can magically and without the users knowledge transfer confidential Data, when in fact you get a pop up box on the screen in order to accept or deny permission. But Natch "Insecure iPhones and DATA Leaks" gets more clicks and moves pixels..... Pure conjecture but wonder if this is someones "Reciprocity" for the Dont Track Option. www.macrumors.com/2023/11/27/ios-17-namedrop-misinformation/

I fear that this will devastating for Warren and will be missed by all. One part of my brain has thought "retire already" for at least the last several years. But it seemed like he really enjoyed doing what he was doing, and he was able to stay as part of the investing community up until the end. It's funny how things change over the years, possibly going from a hobby to a job and then back to a hobby. But in a way it's the same 3 principles that I've slowly decided on over the years of teaching the kids and cousins how to ski. Each personality is a little different, but even with recreational skiing there can be such a push on form and making the perfect turn. But it really comes down to not injuring yourself (having control), not injuring anyone else (skiing safely), and having fun. It sounds the same for him, that with plans in place he was being safe, but he was still having fun.

🍏 Ending Apple Card Partnership With Goldman SachsApple is ending its credit card partnership with Goldman Sachs, according to The Wall Street Journal. Apple plans to stop working with Goldman Sachs in the next 12 to 15 months, and it is not yet clear if Apple has established a new partnership for the Apple Card. Apple and Goldman Sachs will dissolve their entire consumer partnership, including the Apple Card and the Apple Savings account. Apple in a statement that was provided to CNBC said that it will continue to provide "the best tools and services" for Apple Card customers. Rumors earlier this year suggested that Goldman Sachs wanted to get out of its relationship with Apple as part of a plan to cut back on its consumer business. Goldman Sachs at the time was said to be speaking with American Express about a possible takeover, but the Apple Card needs to run on the Mastercard network until 2026 due to a deal established between Apple and Goldman Sachs. Amex also had concerns about aspects of the program such as loan loss rates due to Apple's push to have customers approved, so the status of the talks is not known. www.macrumors.com/2023/11/28/apple-goldman-sachs-partnership-ending/
