Of course the big question is how will the Fed react to this news, which will have an affect on how Mr. Market reacts.

Microsoft overtakes AppleAnd that's fine by me. Let MS get over-scrutinized for a change - maybe. Anyway, I think it'll be short-lived. The AVP pop is coming soon.

Of course the big question is how will the Fed react to this news, which will have an affect on how Mr. Market reacts. The other is how much of this was related to jubilant holiday spending. People can complain about prices being high and even spend a little less in normal times, but sometimes the holidays can mess up that plan. There have been lots of stories about people fed up with price increases or food packaging shrinkage, though it is hard to figure out if those are just the vocal minority or if it is a meaningful thing. Especially when the difference to being on tract or an unexpected rise is 0.2% YOY. For someone spending $500/month, that's a $10 difference. At $5000, it's $100. But I do know that in our town with a huge mix of financial situations, when a Grocery Outlet opened there was a huge surge in visitors. We were sick when it opened, but dropped in a couple weeks later, seeing many we know shopping the store or working there. Part of it is being a new store, checking it out like we were. And while part of it is skipping out on driving over the passes to the big stores, a lot of it was getting things for a sizable discount over the Raleys in town. I think it will be interesting to see what the next month or two of consumer pricing says, since even the seasonal adjusting that they do with some of the data can't always be perfect. But for now, when people are already grasping at hopes of rate decreases happening sooner rather than later, even a tiny blip in the data packs a big punch. Stay safe out there! Both in the market and in whatever weather conditions you have.

Short-lived indeed: Two different live sources show Apple still on top although not by much. It seems Microsoft wore the crown for mere minutes…

In keeping track of current things related to Apple, I saw Masimo was up decently today. Turned out they gave preliminary earnings and guidance. finance.yahoo.com/news/masimo-announces-select-preliminary-2023-130000340.htmlBuried in there was this, that I wasn't aware of: Several dates are coming up on the Masimo front, from today thru the 15th. finance.yahoo.com/news/apple-watch-sales-resume-latest-104400794.htmlJanuary is always a strange time for AAPL, where rumors often fly while in the quiet period pre-earnings. Hopefully the Apple Vision Pro orders starting will help moderate things, and possibly even give a boost. This next month is full of many things that could add to the volatility. We'll see how things go, but this might be a time to remember to continue looking at the long view and not worry about the short term turbulence. A followup from yesterday, after remembering I should look around to see what happened after this first step. Apple Watch import ban stay opposed by ITCSo they feel this is likely to continue for a while, even if the circumvention is approved tomorrow.
