PED has Here comes the Apple Vision Pro backlash. We all know that the flip side of Apple’s fan base is those who desperately want it to fail, and the AVP has characteristics that make its introduction challenging.

Spotify didn’t allow subscriptions or purchases through the App Store at all, so there’s no no revenue loss from them going their own way. They are a poorly run piece of trash company anyway, this change isnt going to improve their chances at success. Nice apple will still have ultimate control anyway, and charging on a per app install basis sounds like a excellent plan.

The AP article had the lowered app store fees: finance.yahoo.com/news/apple-open-iphone-alternative-app-180920515.htmlThe drop that started just after 1pm, about when this news came out, was partially mirrored in the various indexes so isn't entirely about this. But it didn't help. In other Magnificent 7 news, TSLA is down nearly 13% after saying growth won't likely be as high as people were expecting. But I liked seeing this little piece about the Tesla Semi. www.cnn.com/videos/business/2024/01/25/tesla-semi-truck-pepsi-contd-gr-orig.cnn It didn't really have that much info, but it was interesting seeing the stats of a ~500 mile range on a charge, and making it 1047 miles in a day with a recharge and team driving. Pepsi/Frito-Lay are testing some of these out of Sacramento, and we've seen them on 80 near the Donner Pass, including a Cheetos one. I was hoping there would be some mention of how they did with mountains, cold temps, and snow, but there wasn't anything in the video about that other than having regenerative braking, and multiple motors.

Nice apple will still have ultimate control anyway, and charging on a per app install basis sounds like a excellent plan. To get guesses as to how many people would switch to a different app store, one could probably look at the app store of recent Windows versions (at least some versions go to a Microsoft store, and require a change to grab apps from elsewhere. We needed to adjust this for an arduino download or something like that. (Apple has a similar thing, of needing to set "allow outside apps") Or looking at how many people set Safari to use a search engine other than the default. In general, most people will just stick with the default, unless they really have a reason to switch it. But that vocal minority will have an option, and the 3rd party app maker will have the choice of going with a 3rd party app store, even if economy of scale might never make it worth it. But people like to have the choice, even if they don't use it. It's not too different from getting hyper focused on needing something (in our case for tools, I wanted a router and my wife wanted a pocket screw kit from Kregg Jig). Sometimes you end up using it (she's used the jig a few times more than I've used the router), but other times it mostly doesn't get any use. It turned out it was a scapegoat, the one thing you thought was really holding things back, but in retrospect it didn't end up changing much. I don't know how much change will happen from having outside app stores, outside payments, or lower fees. But my guess is that it won't really move the needle much, for Apple, for app developers, or for the consumer.
