Key parts of Apple's compliance with the Digital Markets Act (DMA) are set to be investigated by European regulators based on developer feedback, the EU's antitrust chief warned on Tuesday. "There are things that we take a keen interest in, for instance, if the new Apple fee structure will de facto not make it in any way attractive to use the benefits of the DMA. That kind of thing is what we will be investigating," she told Reuters." "I would think of it as unwise to say that the services are not safe to use, because that has nothing to do with the DMA," said Vestager. "The DMA is there to open the market for other service providers to get to you and how your service provider of your operating system, how they will make sure that it is safe is for them to decide." "And of course, if we see or get the suspicion that this is in order to say that someone else are not doing their job of course, we might take initiatives to look into that," she added. EU wants another Swing at (via Macrumors) What? Like there aren't any more pressing matters in Europe that the EU needs to deal with?

I’m seeing speculation that the DOJ is going to sue Apple for antitrust reasons as soon as tomorrow. That should be fun.

I hope the Apple legal department is well-caffeinated. Of course Bloomberg has been wrong on this for a few years now, so I'm in the believe in when I see it camp. Regardless, it would only signal the beginning of another years long legal battle. I’m seeing speculation that the DOJ is going to sue Apple for antitrust reasons as soon as tomorrow. That should be fun.

In my view of the big 5, Apple, Facebook, and Twitter are not real monopolies. Just Google and Amazon.

In my view of the big 5, Apple, Facebook, and Twitter are not real monopolies. Just Google and Amazon. JD likes to point out that it's not illegal to have a monopoly. It's only if you use the power of a monopoly for evil. There are alternates to Google and Amazon. I feel Amazon was abusing their power a few years back, when it was said they wouldn't allow a lower advertised price elsewhere. Their fee structure seems draconian, but I can see people feeling the same about Apple. We'll see how it goes. There's always the money grab, but the real question is what would they have done differently. Instead of breaking up MSFT, they had some restrictions on Internet Explorer. I guess following Amazon and Ebay's lead, along with a host of utilities, if Apple had previously spread it's fees out into a host of various fees, it would be harder to go after them. 5% hosting fee. 3.2% billing fee. 4% security fee. 5% testing fee. 2% convenience fee. 2% search fee. 2% update fee. I don't even know what that adds up to, nor do I really care. Fair or not, Apple is battling the "they're a big bully" push out there. The tiered 15%/30% pricing is a strange one. I don't think the same justification used for progressive tax rates applies here. Instead it probably makes some of their biggest partners not feel as special, like a current vs switcher promotion at a cellular provider.
