Phew! AAPL is currently trading at $183.89 +10.86 (+6.28%)
We had a great earnings call. Tim and Luca dispelled a lot of the FUD about China. There was a LOT of talk about generative AI too.

iphone $45.9B vs $51.3B, Tim says 5B of last year was extra due to recovery from Covid supply issues (assume he means factories reopening) modifying last year to $46.3B is a difference of down $0.4B or -0.8% which Tim calls "flat".

Given that iPad sales were significantly down last quarter, and the forecast for next quarter is a significant rise, it seems the upcoming announcement in a week must include a new iPad. I'm not sure what else would explain this - or did I miss something? If so, I'm guessing it also comes with some new on-device AI capabilities.
I liked how positive Tim was about ongoing prospects in China and developing markets.

Yep, the announcement is supposed to focus around the iPad, and the invite also had an Apple Pencil in it, so that is likely too. I'm guessing the upgrade cycle on the iPad is a lot different than other devices, but I'm sure it depends on the user and use case. I don't have a good guess as to percentages of what they are used for. There are a lot out there just used as a POS system to put in your CC info. We use ours mostly as a recipe viewer, portable to the kitchen, though occasionally it's a lightweight laptop to bring on a trip. A friend uses his for navigation on a plane. Some people use them as their main device, but it does start to intersect with an iPhone fairly quickly, so is probably more the "main system" if one doesn't have an iPhone or uses an older smaller iPhone just mostly as a phone (what!). Most of these use cases are less demanding, and it seems that would create longer refresh cycles. What do you guys use an iPad for, and how often do you buy a new one compared with an iPhone or Mac?

From the forecasted increase in revenue, it seems they are pretty confidant that it will sell well. Hopefully they do add functions that make it more useful. I currently find that I prefer to do everything with my MacBook Air or phone, and only use the iPad when one of those is down or unnavailable.

OK, the volume has just exceeded 93,000,000, compared to the average volume of 61,548,179...AAPL is up $11.94(+6.9%)...and there's about 2.5 hours left in the market day. AAPL is finally having a pretty good day.
Cheers to the very patient AAPL Longs! 👍😁

Maybe I and other are keeping them longer because nothing is needed or missing? i don't even know how old mine is, case is workout and I still lose the damn pencil. Wish they would make it like the Note.
Great day yesterday hope this time we crack 200. Be well all and congratulate yourself for not selling into the fear.

I think iPads get a lot less wear and tear than iPhones. Plus there is the “bling” factor with iPhones. “Oh, you have the old iPhone model, are you a poor?” But most people don’t walk around with their iPads. So they aren’t used as much. I have a late model iPad that I rarely use, especially since I bought my Macbook Air. While the iPhone is truly a consumer electronics product, is that really the case with iPad? Or is it more of a business product? I will make a point to use my iPad on my Caribbean trip next month as an anti-boredom device on the flights. But any actual work? Macbook Air does that much better.

Macbook Air does that much better. I have to agree with this. I am a heavy user of my macbook pro and my iphones, but I only use my iPad for pretty much one thing, to play a word game that I like. I don't even watch video on my iPad anymore, my macbook pro screen looks better to me and is larger. And I also do bring my iPad with me on trips when I don't bring the macbook pro (and this is almost all trips nowadays).

My iPad vs MacBook Pro (I have both) usage is different than prior posts here. The iPad is my dominant device, primarily due to its form factor. It’s more convenient for me to carry and use on a plane, and also in various household settings like the kitchen, couch with TV on in the background, and even lounging in bed. The tablet form factor is just more convenient for me, rather than a clamshell that needs to be on my lap in a lot of use cases.
I regularly use it for cooking, emails, Slack, texting, web browsing, Notes, banking, calendaring, Reddit, Apple News, Yahoo Finance (big 😊 today!) basic spreadsheets, and a variety of other Apps.
None of these use cases tax the machine much, so I’m having a difficult time figuring out why I would upgrade. I typically upgrade my phone every year, but the iPad is on a multi year replacement schedule.

Macbook Air does that much better. I have 4 iPads ranging from the 1st Gen. to an iPad Air to a couple of Pros. The Pros I occasionally use for work to Operate a remote camera whereby i can be out of sight of Actors on Set but still see what the Camera sees and direct focus exposure and when to take a picture. I'am inclined to keep my newest iPad Pro as close to current as possible for advantages in Screen, WiFi Speeds and Processing Power to help combat latency.
