Did my share to add to the AAPL $$ bottom line. Ordered: 11-inch iPad Pro Wi‑Fi + Cellular 512GB with standard glass - Space Black. W/2yr Applecare. Magic Keyboard for iPad Pro 11‑inch (M4) - US English - Black Personalized Apple Pencil Pro I use my iPads as my goto daily, carry the iPhone, but use the pad for media consumption and financial things like Think-or-Swim the Ameritrade/Schwab platform. My old eyes {75} find the larger screen easier to use. Still like desktop iMac 24" for anything that requires interaction. I consider my Apple toys FREE, paid for by our AAPL dividends!

Agree with above poster but like the 27" and someday will get the old 30" cinema display working again. My old iPad has a 400 trade in value. Don't see much reason for the pro not the air? Anyone?

I have found apple care useless. For the money you can make most repairs and nothing usually goes wrong so... It's insurance, so it all depends on the preference and use case. For instance on older iPhones, there were generally various options for replacement screens on Amazon. They weren't quite as good as OEM (colors weren't quite perfect, and hard to know how hard the glass was in comparison, but functionality was great), but some were as cheap as $20, and many highly rated ones were in the $30-$50 range. My wife's 14 Pro fell onto a rock, and now she has a fingerprint sized black section. On the $1k iPhone, Apple wants $350 to replace it. Apple now sells OEM parts to people, but it's something like $310 for the part, or $280 after returning the old one. So on the order of 10x the price of past fixes. She's used it like this for 9-12 months, and we're down to 9 months left on the contract before the next upgrade. I don't know if she'd going to have it fixed or not, though I'd rather spend $1k on a new iPhone (ideally waiting for the 16 pro).

I had AppleCare for my watch, and when the solo loop silicone strap broke, I went to Apple store and they gave me a new one. Well, they ordered it and I had to come back to pick it up. Since then, I've bought spares when they go on sale (we have 4 Apple watches in our family).

Pro Motion display used to be a huge reason. Scrolling on non pro devices is at 60Hz refresh rate I believe where “Pro Motion” allows screen to refresh at 120Hz. Noticeably smoother scrolling. There were many calling for 120Hz to trickle down from Pro models. I haven’t caught up with the full specs of the new iPad Air yet to see if they included 120Hz refresh or not. Speakers are better, screen is capable to go brighter (past Pro vs Air), nice for sitting outside and seeing the screen. Anyway those are a few of the previous Pro advantages.

It seems the new Apple crush ad, which I found cringey AF, is being universally panned. I completely agree. It’s horrifying. Apple at its core is a human centric company, and you don’t crush human creativity, human invention, human history, human anything to make a point. The 1984 ad was terrific because of the point it made. This is the opposite. I strongly suspect that Steve Jobs would never have allowed an ad like that to happen.

⬆️What Mark Said! ⬆️
Well they certainly crushed Aperture the Pro Photographers Application for no valid reason. Was particularly upset by the Logic Pro and Final Cut Upgrades. So cares about Music and Video but Photographers can go to Hell? I once had the Producer of Lost and the Writer of Braveheart staring at my Aperture Set-up during a HMU & Costume Test for a new 📺 Show. Was shooting tethered from my Nikon to my MBP and output to a Cinema Display and Aperture ran the whole thing for 12 hours - You cant Buy that type of Advertising !

Since then, I've bought spares when they go on sale (we have 4 Apple watches in our family). Speaking of the Watch, how are other people's Watch glass faces holding up? I got a small scratch in the first 30 days or so, and then another big one recently, after about 3 months. We're not even into trail building season yet. But it's been decades since I've consistently worn a watch, and this Series 9 seems especially thick. I expected gorilla glass or sapphire lenses or whatever they are using these days to hold up a bit better. Does anyone use a screen protector on it, or a guard of some sort? My wife reminded me of the ones back with the Swatch Watch. Overall so far, it's had some positives, but they've been more health specific than I imagined. It is easy to record a hike, but today I was also pulling up maps on my iPhone to help find the route. After answering a spam call I don't take phone calls on it, and the screen isn't big enough to see most of my text messages. But I think it has helped me exercise and get up from the chair a little bit more, so that pays for itself right there. I generally charge it at night instead of wearing it. And while I checked the oxygen sensor part a couple times at first, I haven't used that or the EKG since. It was handy a week ago using it while kayaking, being easy to glance at. Should be the same with biking and paddle boarding. That said, if my wife or kids wanted mine, I'd probably buy an SE instead, especially if it is a bit less thick. I just seem to bang it on things occasionally (don't know how it got scratched , and it's even just thick enough that it makes getting into some LS shirts or jackets a little tough. But I imagine the warmer months will be a more ideal time to have it.

New, "Improved" Ad By Commenter It's interesting to see different comments on different platforms. I'm sure there can be a different subset of the population, but X is also set up as more of a "seat of your pants" type platform for comments. (side note: just like how a financial bubble is different for something you are a part of vs something you are an observer of, so too is the renaming of something big. Locally, that is Squaw->Palisades, but I'm much more of an observer with the Twitter->X rename) I don't always bother to look at the comments, and I think CNN's comment option is fairly new. Sometimes they just catch you off guard, like the ones in this article that overall is about how some strange animals developed 591M years ago when there was a lull in the earth's magnetic field when the earth's core changed from being completely liquid to having a solid center core. That was a dense mouthful. www.cnn.com/2024/05/07/world/earth-magnetic-field-near-collapse-ediacaran-scn/index.html#openweb-convoAnd while there's a lot of static there on the basic differing views, for me one comment string brought out that even though I often want to understand the reason things happen instead of just the observation that they happened, I didn't realize that some things like gravity have good observational equations but that we don't really understand the why behind it. Ahhhh life! Back to the ad, like a Super Bowl ad it comes back to if you remember it, if you remember who it was for, and then if it gave you a positive impression on the item, to make you more likely to buy it. Does the ad do all that? Probably. At first I wondered if this was done with CGI, but it's more likely they just set up a whole lot of cameras to capture any details. "We've got just 1 take!!!" It's just Gallager up there with a sledge hammer, thwacking a watermelon. Cheap basic entertainment. Refined a little, but still basic.

My wife reminded me of the ones back with the Swatch Watch. My watch is 2 1/2 years old and is holding up fine.I have one small scratch on the face, and maybe a few tiny ones that aren't noticeable. While I am in the pool or shower, the water still beads up nicely on the glass. I have one nick in the aluminum case. My only complaint is battery life, since my battery has aged (it says 80% capacity now), I have to charge it twice a day instead of once a day. It hit 82% after a year and a half and stayed there right through the end of my Applecare warranty period (only kicks in under 80%). So now I wear it 22 hours a day instead of 23 hours a day. When I first got it, my sister-in-law was horrified that I didn't get a protector for it. I considered a protector, but it's big enough as it is and I felt that I didn't need to make it bigger. I told her that they probably make them pretty durable because after all people wear them in a location that is so easily banged or brushed against all sorts of stuff. Of course, this sister-in-law uses armored cases for all her Apple devices, all the iphones in their family have those huge otterbox defender cases on them.

new Apple crush ad
My take this is a Maoist cultural revolution ad. Sweep away the past and move on to a better future unburdened by the problems and mistakes....but it turns out unenlightened by the success, sacrifices and wisdom...of those who came before. So...Steve was known for his collection of vinyl LPS. Maybe another ad going into his house and crushing them? It is a very pointed ad aimed at the youth who think they are superior and spend time posting snarky BS. Not a kind of Think Different ad that warms the heart.

John Gruber has several different sections on Apple's crush ad: Daring Fireball David Heinemeier Hansson: Hating Apple goes mainstream This should all be eerily familiar to anyone who saw Microsoft fall from grace in the 90s. From being America’s favorite software company to being the bully pursued by the DOJ for illegalities. Just like Apple now, Microsoft’s reputation and good standing suddenly evaporated seemingly overnight once enough critical stories had accumulated about its behavior. It’s not easy to predict these tipping points. Tim Cook enthusiastically introduced this awful ad with a big smile, and I’m sure he’s sitting with at least some sense of “wtf just happened?” and “why don’t they love us any more?”. Because companies like Apple almost have to ignore the haters as the cost of doing business, but then they also can’t easily tell when the sentiment has changed from “the usual number” to “one too many”. And then, boom, the game is forever changed.John Gruber: Ever since this controversy regarding the “Crush” ad erupted yesterday, I’ve been wondering the same thing. As I wrote yesterday, when I first saw the ad during the keynote, I didn’t think twice about it. It didn’t strike me as particularly clever, but I didn’t suspect for even a second that it might prove even slighty controversial. It just didn’t strike a nerve for me. But clearly it stuck a nerve for many, evoking negative emotional responses — which for a brand like Apple’s, makes it ipso facto a failed ad.But Apple could have used this exact same concept for any previous “thinnest ever” iPad. They could have used this exact same commercial for the original iPad in 2010 — a device that doesn’t seem thin or light by today’s standards but was rightly considered remarkably thin and light at the time it launched. You can paint, you can draw, you can edit photos and video, you can make music, you can play games — all in this single incredibly thin device. That’s not a new message for iPads.Would this exact same commercial have evoked the same collective response in 2010? I’m going to say no, it would not have. What about in 2018? I’m going to say ... probably not? Something has changed. Part of it is that our culture has changed. I don’t think many people 10 or 15 years ago would have seen dissonance between Apple’s oft-professed sustainability ideals and a commercial celebrating the destruction of artistic tools and objects. But part too is that Apple’s position in our culture has changed. They’re no longer, and never again will be, the upstart. They’re The Man now. They’re part of the firmament of our entire society, not just the tech world. When you’re on top, everyone guns for you.===========APPLE APOLOGIZES FOR IPAD PRO AD THAT ‘MISSED THE MARK’Tor Myhren, Apple’s VP of marketing communications, in a statement to Ad Age:Creativity is in our DNA at Apple, and it’s incredibly important to us to design products that empower creatives all over the world. Our goal is to always celebrate the myriad of ways users express themselves and bring their ideas to life through iPad. We missed the mark with this video, and we’re sorry.John Gruber: Not just an apology, but an apology attributed to a person. That’s how you do it.The standard shouldn’t be never to make a mistake. It’s to make as few mistakes as possible, but quickly recognize, acknowledge, and address the ones you do make.(Via 9to5Mac, which helpfully quotes Myhren’s entire statement. Ad Age’s paywall offers zero free page views.)============ CRUSHED-INTO-A-HANDHELD-GADGET COMMERCIALS ★ Andy Allen found a 2008 LG phone commercial that’s pretty much the same concept as Apple’s new “Crush” ad. And here’s a 1998 Nintendo commercial in which a bus full of Pokemon get smushed into a GameBoy.
