Mac Pro says a lot about Apple. They're not through with the Mac or some segments of the pro market just yet.
Also, the idea that you can actually stuff a Mac Pro into a backpack is absurdly awesome. Of course some will never forgive Apple for the lack of expandability (though we _are_ talking Xeon E5s and workstation GPUs, so it's not like future-proofing is either all that practical or cheap). But I doubt Apple wasn't getting plenty of feedback from Mac Pro customers as it prepared the new system.

What did the projected displays look like in previous WWDCs? I have the Oct 23'rd one in iTunes, but for some reason it isn't displaying when I play it (on PC, of course). I just took a quick look at Forstall's last two WWDC presentations, and all of the screen images I saw were either real devices or mockups that looked identical to them. This feels like a deliberate change in presentation style to me. Why? That's a different question. Upon further review, this "mystery device" seems to be no more than a truncated white iPhone 5. Throughout the iOS segment, the camera close-ups frequently zoomed in past the home button (bottom) and speaker, etc (top) leaving us just the tall rectangle and side buttons framed in white thus allowing the amazing screen images to really pop. Edit: I guess I was the only one thinking Mace meant it was a mystery device... But, yeh, why did they always show it in that view?

I'm assuming that at some stage Apple will unveil a large screen Retina display to accompany the new Mac Pro (2014?) As the new machine looks so beautiful and is small enough to sit on a desk, I cannot imagine Apple being happy to see it hooked up to some aesthetically-challenged third party display.

I had the same thought twice during the keynote - once during the OS X multiple display demo where a Apple TV was used as the third screen, and again for the Mac Pro and its 4K resolution support.

Cowen's take on iOS 7 and its potential to drive people to upgrade their phones:
"Per Apple, iOS 7 will be compatible with iPhone 4 (and beyond), iPad 2 (and beyond), iPad mini and the 5th-generation iPod Touch. Based on our estimate of the composition of the iOS installed base, we estimate that as many as 20-30MM active iOS devices (many in prepaid markets now) will not be upgradable to iOS 7; that higher level of obsolescence could drive more hardware updates, a factor outside of expectations given the iOS 6 effect was smaller."

I hate to break up the iOS 7 love fest, but I'd like to state again that it is very troubling that Google, rather than Apple, bought a great app like Waze. It's the main map/nav app I use, most notably for the reporting of police and speed traps.
This is a huge app. Facebook for cars.

Was there a macro event at 330p? A lot of tech stocks tanked at that time.

I'm not sure about iMacs driving a 14.7M pixel display right yet, y'know? Not cheaply, anyway. Could Apple run "regular" and Retina iMacs side by side for a year or two? Sure. I really doubt you'd see outright replacement. And I bet Apple is wondering if there's really a market for that many pixels. A middle ground is also possible. An iMac that has a native 3840x2160 display + a "more space" option to display at 2560x1440 scaled. Supposedly, Apple's already able to get the midrange NVIDIA 650Ms to render up AND scale down a 3840x2160 display on the 15" rMBP (so says Anand from AnandTech, who's all kinds of legit). iMac 4K.

I just watched the keynote. Some things that stood out to me.
1. itunes radio is going to lead more people to buy more songs.
2. It was noted that the mac pro can hook up to 3 "3rd party" 4k displays. When Phil indicated "3rd party", it leads me to believe that Apple has one in the works.
3. I don't think Scott Forestall is holding out any hope of coming back to Apple after all of the little digs.
4. ios7 is going to cause more people to upgrade their iphones/ ipods.
5. More integration/uses of Apple TV.
Overall, I see improvement in the product, and some indications of increase profit streams.

1. itunes radio is going to lead more people to buy more songs. Agreed, the concept and implementation of itunes radio looks very good from both user and business points of view.

Agreed, the concept and implementation of itunes radio looks very good from both user and business points of view. iTunes Radio could do a great deal more. I think this is only the first stab at it. I want it to look at my music and find a station for me. The genius concept is not working well in iTunes. I have lots of issues with it where it tells me there are not enough songs to create one.

Apple likes "Designed by Apple" too: www.apple.com/designed-by-apple/And it feels co-written by Ive and Cook, which adds to that collaborative thing. "Defensive branding" at its best, if you ask me.

The majority of the time consumers just use the built in apps for core functions like maps, email, camera & web browser. The moment apple replaced google as the default iOS maps provider, it won the war. Its even more obvious in hindsight when you look at how bad apple maps was on launch, yet it still became the leading iOS maps app overnight due to it coming by default in iOS 6.

Pegatron (apple assembler) May revenues are in: up 10% month over month. pegatroncorp.com/investorRelations/monthlyRevenues.phpOf course pegatron also manufactures for other customers, but at least we are less likely to see FUD headlines about apple due to "supplier weakness" reports.

The most used navigation app on iOS devices is....Apple Maps. Don't mean to call you out specifically, but do we have any stats on this? I don't want to assume this even though it's the default choice in iOS6. I know quite a few people who go out of their way to avoid Apple Maps and instead explicitly use Google Maps for everything (especially since the new Google Maps app does nav as well). It's not as convenient (Apple Maps open by default), but they just copy and paste the address into Goog Maps manually.

Well 100% of iOS 6 users have apple maps installed, and the core OS hooks into this app as a service for other apps (Siri, reminders, data detection system wide, find my iPhone, find my friends, photo geo location, 3rd party apps etc). A google friendly report in January gave google maps 29% USA iPhone marketshare insights.onavo.com/blog/google-iphone-apps-show-robust-market-share-gains/ (think about that for a minute - google fell from being installed on 100% of USA iPhones to 29%). And that's the USA market, whereas in the global marketplace googles share would be even less, given that in some countries (like china) google has near to no presence with its maps suffering as a result.

Who gives a $#!t what is the most-used? Android is the most-used mobile OS by that logic. What matters is what is the best. I have an iPhone and Apple maps is not my most-used Nav app. Because Waze is better. And now that Google will be pushing it, it will become much, much more popular. A missed opportunity by Apple and Facebook. IMO, Apple had better get their shit together WRT car interfacing, because the car audio/nav manufacturers and their customers have been asking for iOS integration for along time, and right now, it totally sucks, unless you buy a brand new car with iOS. I've been wanting to buy a head unit for some time, and I am getting tired of waiting for the iOS-friendly versions.

WWDC may not be doing anything immediately for my AAPL investment but there's some therapy from just watching the event again. Apple put on a great show.
The opening sequence is terrific btw.
As one of Apple's newest developers, I'll be downloading iOS7 within the week. I also plan to attend next year's WWDC, come hell or high water. And for the record, I have created an app using Filemaker Pro as the backend -- it's a work in process and I see attendance as an opportunity to create a better front end for an industry specific app. So, next year, AFB2 will have at least one blogger at the event.

Schiller + ad direction = eh. As long as the products themselves are communicated properly (and the marketing everywhere else is solid), doesn't big me much.
But the more I see of the executive team the less "worried" I am if Schiller were to leave. Not that I think he's a drag on Apple - Tim obviously doesn't think so. Schiller _has_ peaked as hardware presenter some time ago, but at least he had the line of the keynote yesterday.

I'm struck by the oft used word "feel/ing" in these ads. Reminds me of Toyota's "Oh, what a feeling" ads of about 25 years ago. It worked very well for them. Very well indeed..

I just watched the keynote. Some things that stood out to me. 1. itunes radio is going to lead more people to buy more songs Yes. In the last week I watched 2 movies on Netflix where the sound track was excellent. If, and when, Apple does something with TV, I hope they provide a music buying option ala iTunes Radio. There will always be those willing to pay a premium for an Apple Display. Actually its smart for Apple to do this for another reason. By charging more, they help 3rd party developers to protect their pricing model, preventing a race to the bottom, where the first thing that suffers is quality, and the second thing to suffer is customer satisfaction with the COMPUTER. A very big YES. I'll be trading in my iPhone 5. I know there's a lot of expectations in this area, but I still don't see a physical TV in Apple's future. Much better to license the AppleTV to a manufacturer and maintain control of the user experience. As someone said earlier today, "after the initial pleasure derived from a hardware design has waned, its the software controlled experience that maintains the excitement over time". Agreed, especially regarding profit margins.
