Chitika says Apple still rules the tablet market, growing its share to 84.3% in June. Alas, time to buy AMZN though, because bad news is good news: The Kindle Fire dropped from 7.4% in April to 5.7% in June. And one wonders why WS is viewed with such utter contempt. money.cnn.com/2013/07/22/technology/apple-earnings/index.html

I remember like it was yesterday when Andy Zaky, relying heavily on TA, tried to call a bottom on Apple in October. I thought, what a joke, as much as I wanted to believe it. WS wasn't going to let him call a bottom and I had even less faith in TA.

Up or down, all depends on the results. I don't buy AAPL being forced anywhere it doesn't "deserve" to go just yet, but I guess we can argue about it for just another 45 or so minutes more. ;D
Earnings is "less important" than guidance it seems, but Apple reporting in the upper third or quarter of the revs/net income ranges would be the "base case" for me. After that, we'll see if Apple's guidance encompasses $37.5B or so in revs anywhere in the range and go from there.
I'll check in now and then over the next hour. Good luck to all!

How else do you set up a put up or shut up technical situation? "Maneuver" the price to that level...somehow...just before earnings!
Supply and demand.

WS wasn't going to let him call a bottom and I had even less faith in TA. It really had nothing to do with WS letting him call the bottom...WS was ahead of the amateurs in seeing negative EPS growth so they sold. AAPL went from growing EPS at a near 100% clip to shrinking EPS...if I had known what they'd report in January, you can get I would have sold in the fall as well.

I doubt seriously WS knew what was going to happen to margins, which is the cause for the fall, this is less about sales and units. If WS is so smart, why has it bumped GOOG on a 3% YOY EPS gain? It's ridiculous.

Yeah, sure. There's EOs and then there's wink wink nudge nudge FLAMING SECURITIES LAWS VIOLATION plus LEAK WITHIN APPLE C'mon. Yes, because no one ever broke the law to make a little money...and the SEC has cracked down viciously on everyone who has. Cmon

Ahahahaha.
iPhone less relevant because everyone has it? Keen insight, CNBC contributor.

You don't think an earnings leak isn't kind of a BIG DEAL?
That takes market gaming to the extreme. You CANNOT hide something like that from an investigation in a nation of laws.
I would add, if it happened, I'd expect more volatility.

It's ridiculous. In hindsight, the margin decrease happened because the iPad gets a much lower margin than the iPhone and the iPad Mini even more so. Since iPad has been growing much faster than the iPhone, the decreasing margins seem a little more obvious now.

Yes, its a huge deal...but if you believe it never happens (even to a few small people, not major brokerage houses) I have a bridge to sell you.

YESAnd I've been criticized for trying to understand, in real time, what the Institutions are doing. Wouldn't it have been nice if we had figured that out 9 months ago?

AT&T sold 6.8M total smartphones, up from 5.1M a year ago. Don't see a breakdown on iPhones, will probably have to wait for the call.

Let's be reasonable. This is APPLE. It's not some little-known issue.
OpEx and algorithm and nanosecond trading have nothing on good old fashioned earnings leaks.

With all the prohibitions against fomenting, I'm surprised no one has tried to make a case of it against CNBC. I mean, isn't that what they're doing? See Jim Cramer's explanation www.youtube.com/watch?v=c6gxPCurDJs

This selloff looks very much like previous pre-earnings selloffs. I wouldn't try to figure out what it means. The effort would wasted.

Another tidbit from the AT&T release: "Phone-Only Postpaid ARPU Increases 3.0 percent. Postpaid phone-only ARPU increased 3.0 percent versus the year-earlier quarter. Total postpaid subscriber ARPU, which includes high margin but lower-ARPU tablets, increased 1.8 percent versus the year-earlier quarter. This marked the 18th consecutive quarter AT&T has posted a year-over-year increase in postpaid ARPU. Postpaid data ARPU increased 17.6 percent versus the year-earlier quarter."
The iPhone effect.

Twenty minutes to the Press Release and my former brother-in-law calls to say he and the wife are coming over. I suggested, politely but firmly, that they think 3 hours from now.

44% increase on VZ and 33% on AT&T (making assumptions about iPhone mix). What does that spell? A higher # than my 27M iPhone estimate.
