Did anyone else notice the following in that Samsung story? ``Samsung is asking Apple to pay more to use its mobile application processors produced at its plant in Austin, Texas. The release of the S4 means more market share for Samsung as it is the only firm that can guarantee on-time delivery, output commitment and better pricing for mobile application processors,’’ said one executive. This sure sounds like some kind of threat. The sooner TMSC ramps up to samsung-quality chips the better. Who knows, maybe Intel will also be an option at some point if they can easily convert a fab line to producing ARM chips for Apple.

If Apple does release an ipad mini will you crush you 'crystal ball' cheers to the longs JohnG FWIW: I also believe Apple will not release an iPad mini. Apple has announced 12 different iPod touch products (6 different colors including RED) X (2 different sizes 16GB & 32GB) at $299 and $399. The cheapest iPad is $499. What will be the selling points and price points of a iPad mini? Greetings from the other side of the river. You've been m.i.a. for quite some time. Hope everything is good. Don't forget about the iPad 2 @ 399.00. I expect the mini to show up sooner or later for the car market if for no other reason. iPhone is a bit small and iPad is way too large for the dash of an automobile.

What will be the selling points and price points of a iPad mini? iPods are in a different market to tablets - people are not going to be scratching their heads comparing a $299 iPod touch to a $299 iPad mini. The touch is far more portable a product (pocketable, can be worn in an armband for fitness etc) and has more storage (32GB at $299), and it runs apps designed for 3.5"/4.0" iOS devices (iPhones apps). The rumored ipad mini is less portable due to its larger screen (around 8" I assume), is far better for reading and replacing most general computing needs (browsing web, email etc). Storage is likely to be 8-16GB for the entry level model at about $299, and it runs apps designed for 8"/10" iOS devices (iPad apps). Another way to think about it: All the recent 7" android tablet devices (nexus 7', Kindle Fire) are targeting the iPad (and failing for the most part) - no one mentions them in the same sentence as the iPod touch -even though it likely outsells them all

I'm no expert, but I'd certainly guess well under 100 of them. Hmm. Can't imagine what company would have billions just sitting around looking for a good investment. Nope, absolutely no possibilities come to mind.

I think the iPad Mini is going to round out Apple's screen size offerings really well. When I go to bed I read with the iPad (2) while lying back and the next day, like today, my hands hurt 'cause it's just too heavy - but I keep doing it oddly. The Mini will be the perfect iOS bedside and travel companion, be priced as a loss leader ($249?), and will crush the Nexus and the Fire before they get up enough speed for take-off... Let's hope that story above is real.

I will be sorely disappointed if it doesn't have GPS. Perhaps that's one of the reasons Apple left GPS off the otherwise lovely new iPod.... It is hard to imagine Apple conceding the midsize tablet market to the competition. Damn the margins (although they might be better than one might guess).

Well, Bill, he does know you from a while back, and you provided your name. My creepy experience with Prodigy Online checkers when I was an impressionable, younger lad sticks with me. I will of course take up MB's kind offer of food and shelter should I ever find myself lost in his neck of the woods. And don't forget I'm #1 in Karma. ;D I'm still looking forward to irritating our southern friend in person but keep missing the Vegas shindigs. I recall thinking how seemingly normal he looked when someone posted the group shot a couple of years back. Who knew? Actually, that's just a raw Karma score. One good Smite can send you back to zero.

Let's hope that story above is real. During the Samsung patent trial, an email was produced in which Senior VP Eddy Cue urged Steve Jobs, Cook and Schiller to buy into a 7" iPad. Anyone who has used a Barnes and Noble or Amazon reader knows that they are lighter/less cumbersome, present a paperback sized page and just plain make more sense, as a reader, on a subway or at night in bed. The same may be true for movie consumption. For me, the underlying question is whether Apple is serious about selling electronic books. So far, it doesn't look like it. Compared to Amazon and Barnes and Noble, the iBook selection is abysmal.

John Gruber (the guy Phil Schiller gives personal demos to) and John Dalrymple, likely the two best-sourced and most accurate Apple commentators extant, have all but confirmed the iPad Mini. Absent contrary reports from better sources, the rest is all speculation and guesstimation. I realize that is largely what analysis is, but when you have sourced reports from respected people, it would be prudent to believe them.
One thing I learned working in journalism: News |FIREWALL| Analysis
And as far as analysis goes, I do not find conflicting price points to be persuasive, when they also conflict with well-selling products by competitors. Better to compete with yourself than to cede a proven market to others.
Besides, as others have said, iPads and iPhones and iPods are different markets.

iPhones sell from $0 to $849 (depending on carrier subsidy, capacity and if you want your iPhone factory unlocked).
iPads sell from $399 to $829.
Price overlaps don't seem to get in the way of record sales.

After hours record high: 701.75
I agree there's little competition between an iPod touch and iPad mini if users can hold them side by side. I'll have to get to the Apple Retail Stores quick for the iPod touch -- whenever they get them.

The Ipad mini is coming. There is just way, way too much information out there to doubt it. And, the NEW investor friendly Apple would not let the story perk out there this long if it was not going to occur. They would have had Dalrymple or Gruber (probably the Loop Master) just play it down "for 2012" and the speculation would have died away. Its coming. And, how, pray tell, can MAV have better Karma than me!!!

I was impressed with the iPod touch redesign, though it _is_ seemingly destined to lag behind in the SoC space now.

This is very interesting analysis from Horace. I am not sure if he accounted for this (it doesn't appear he did) but as Apple grows its iOS category offerings (ie. as iPad ramps up) the average number of iOS devices per iOS owner should grow. This means iOS unit growth should outpace iTunes growth going forward. Regardless, if the next 500M+ iOS devices are sold in 40% of the time of the first 500M (2 years vs. 5 years), AAPL is still just getting started. www.asymco.com/2012/09/17/projecting-ios-devices-through-itunes-account-growth/

This reminds me of the Apple TV rumors that did not pan out, the iPod Mini, or the iPhone Mini. Or the cheaper MacBook Air. It will not happen. An Oct event may be a new larger iMac that is newly redesigned with a much thinner screen and portable ( meaning you can mount it on a wall ). These iPad Mini rumors are designed to hurt iPad sales but it will hurt the Kindle and Nexus instead.

For more active traders, the "good news" is that max pain doesn't seem to work its dark magic until near the _end_ of a trading week. Though as I said, these aren't "ordinary" calls, as most if not all of you know. "Worse", I think it's a quadruple witching Friday. So be prepared for some weird price action.

Thought I heard someone say he's part of Braeburn. "The Wisdom of Patience" post seems a little presumptuous, I have to say. Hey, even rank amateurs like me (well, maybe more in terms of skill than battle scars ) can pull off a momo-type setup now and then. There's more than one way to play and win the game. Just one comment on one article, though. Not drawing any conclusions.

Checkers? What are you, 85? :-) bailed on a few bear spreads I had for a teeny tiny loss. Rolled some deep ITM Jan13 verticals into Aprs. $700 will get people's attention. We didn't sit at $600 too long. MB, glad to see you back. Time for some bubbly tonight! Chas, feels good in here. The PM's and public comments have made me feel good. FTR, I wish I had handled things differently between us. I let my emotions get the best of me. Believe it or not, I have thought about our round of golf at Bali Hai. I have told a lot of people about that round of golf. You really impressed me that day.
