BI is quick, as usual, to bring out Apple FUD whenever possible. Now that Apple has released their SDK for the watch, BI put out a hit piece entitled, "This Developer Pointed Out A Major Flaw In The Apple Watch" by some guy named Sam Colt. It's been gratifying to see how quickly the commenters are pushing back. The article was released less than an hour ago and there are already 13 of 13 comments slamming the dishonesty of the article and its author. Love it.
To save anyone from linking, here's the "Major Flaw" FUD.
Apple on Tuesday released WatchKit, the company's software building tool for Apple Watch, and developers have already discovered a flaw in the operating system's design.
" The watch and the phone are constantly talking," an iOS developer who has used WatchKit told Business Insider. "The code actually sits on your phone. Only the [user interface] elements are on the watch."
The Apple Watch will be dependent on your iPhone to run virtually every application.
Your iPhone does all the heavy lifting while your Apple Watch acts like an extra display. <= Shocking, right?
" This will present dev problems," said our source. "This can be overcome, but sharing app state and data will be tricky."
In fact, our source was surprised by how iPhone-centric the Apple Watch's operating system is.
"It's interesting how little the watch does; it seems that it literally does nothing except [user interface] work." <= More shocking info
That doesn't bode well for the Apple Watch.
Apple is known for linking its products together, but the Apple Watch is so dependent on the iPhone to do anything that Apple has effectively added hundreds to the cost of their already pricey smartwatch.
On the other hand, Apple probably expects iPhone owners to be a large chunk of Apple Watch buyers.
But they probably want more than just another display to look at.
OK, Mav. Many more comments since I posted this morning. Only one Apple basher.

That the Apple Watch is designed to be a companion product for iPhone users doesn't bother me, but if its true that the Watch is simply an external monitor for the phone and (almost) nothing works without a constant and realtime connection to the phone, that could be a big impact on the experience. I realize it doesn't have a SIM card so it cannot communicate to the outside world without the phone present, but I would expect other things to function locally/cached.
I would expect to be able to go running without my phone and have my GPS recorded (we know it doesn't have GPS, so this is a gap.) If I walk to my neighbors, I'd still like to be reminded of a calendar appointment. If I had recent text messages (received when I was last in range of the phone) I'd expect to be able to see those and queue up a response. I'm sure there are many other examples....

Major flaw revealed? The watch can't do it all since the battery would have to be too big to fit into a watch. It's technically impossible to do at this stage to have a battery powerful enough to run it independently. Everybody already knew that the watch needed to interacted with the iPhone. That's why it can't be used with an Android device. That's why it's an asset since nobody else has such a worthwhile device. It will drive sales of the iPhone as Adroid users convert.

here comes Sammy again, with another apple-bashing story of course. I am starting to think Sam's actual name is Samsung. By the way, native app support is coming in late 2015. It's a non-issue. But to anybody at Business Insider, it is the calling for Apple-is-doomed meme.

I wonder how that would affect iPhone's battery life since it has to actively breastfeed the Watch
wirelessly.

And that is a major flaw how exactly? If a product is made a certain way which Apple told everyone that you need an iphone to operate it, how exactly is that a major flaw, if that is the intended idea for the watch.

Was this unnamed iOS developer named Sam Sung? (And was he not at the Apple Watch launch presentation where this was made clear?)

And, another hit piece on Apple. Just how much do you get paid to write this nonsense on a daily basis?
This article is about as useful as complaining that gasoline purchase require a car! Oh noes!! No one will ever buy gasoline because they'd need to buy a car first!

Yeah, he is a moron and a dunce to boot! But guys, why bother with the sex life of the ants at Business Insider?

So how about someone makes the watch twice as big so it can do more? Oh, wait. That's what everyone else did and those are selling how many? Exactly! Nobody knows because it's too painful for any manufacturer to say how much they are losing.

That is actually very smart. Think about it, if the watch is just sensors, the battery could last for weeks without charging. It only drains the battery when you are interacting with it.

The transmitter uses most of the battery. If it has to "talk" to the phone constantly, it will drain the battery rather quickly. Just like your phone, if you turn off the GPS, bluetooth, and cell, the battery will last a long time.

If it did not have the ability to tell time would be a major flaw...

So it works like it was designed and how Apple said it works, that's only a 'major' flaw? Why not fatal or disastrous?

@sam Colt: Business Insider actually pays you to write for them? I guess you need to earn a paycheck but next time choose a topic that you understand, because it is obvious you have no clue about this subject. Maybe a change of careers is in store for you.

Apple has already said that they will open up the ability for more native watch apps later in 2015.

Perhaps Sam Colt needs to read Apple's press release where it specifically states native apps would be available later in 2015. Of course doing so would ruin his negative Apple watch meme,

Hee, hee, hee. Sam, all you had to do was be conscious ever since the watch was announced. Apple has said that from the beginning. Hear Ye! Hear Ye! What a douche.

#$%$ does this mean? Added "hundreds to the cost" HUH??
Was this editor expecting Apple Watch to work with Android or Nokia?? Dipshits.
It works with my iPhone 5s...how does owning an Apple Watch add hundreds ?
Yes, Apple Watch works with Apple iPhones...is this something new??
This article makes my brain hurt....

"On the other hand, Apple probably expects iPhone owners to be a large chunk of Apple Watch buyers."
Hmm, you think? No, really. I thought that windows phone owners would pay 400 bucks for something that does not connect to their device in any way. This is one of the dumbest statements; scratch that, dumbest articles I have ever read. And I am on yahoo every day. I thought it couldn't get any dumber. They surprise me all the time that way.
David S 2 hours ago2 1
It is intended to be an iPhone companion product. It would have zero value to an Android or Blackberry owner.
Apple has great engineering and design teams. I'm sure they've studied all options very carefully trading off parameters like battery life, size/weight, and functionality.
The ability to do the heavy lifting on the iPhone sounds like a design win, rather than a disadvantage, to me. The alternative would be for the watch battery to do the heavy lifting. In that event, you either have a gigantic and heavy watch that could double as a boat anchor, or you have maybe 30 minutes battery life on a good day.

"But they probably want more than just another display to look at."
Apple users aren't allowed to demand. They just have to use whatever they're given by Apple because it's all they know. Obey is their motto.

Sam Colt is a hack writer who drags down Business Insider's already questionable reputation. He is consistently wrong about Apple, and shameless in his ridiculous bias against Apple. I believe Apple's sales, earnings and customer loyalty tell the story better than Sam.
