Good morning... Only 10 days left for Christmas...truly this year has been a blur for so many reasons. Can't believe Christmas is almost upon us. In Australia the hostage situation continues in a stand-off. Details are scattered including who it is and why. This week we have the Fed decision on Weds. - (cue the dramatic sound in the background "will they lose the ' considerable time' phrase from their comments???") Friday is monthly OpEx - triple witching. Oil got down to $57.10 - money that isn't spent on energy worldwide can be used somewhere else - we're only looking at the positives today - no negativity - too close to Christmas! Most trading blogs over the weekend were very negative...which probably means we will get a bounce today. Asia down overnight (except for Shanghai) and Europe currently in the green US futures are green and currently pointing to a triple digit opening. AAPL also GREEN in PM trading at $110.53 (+0.80) A mob bosses' daughter once told me to believe none of what you read and half of what you see (true story): Reports of profitability of the "Great Apple Chinese Slayer" were greatly exaggerated: Xiaomi reported earnings of only $56 million in 2013, one-tenth what WSJ reported and 1/150 Apple's Chinese earnings. Reuters reported today that, according to Chinese securities filings by Xiaomi associated with the firm's investment in appliance maker Midea Group, the high volume smartphone maker reported earning a profit of 347.48 million Chinese yuan ($56.15 million U.S.) on revenues of 26.58 billion yuan ($4.3 billion). AppleInsider: appleinsider.com/articles/14/12/15/xiaomi-reported-earnings-of-only-56-million-in-2013-one-tenth-what-wsj-reported-and-1150-apples-chinese-earningsApple's new holiday ad, "The Song" getting such great reviews - if you haven't seen it macrumors has a little write-up or head on over to cult of mac which also speaks about the new tear-jerker ad: www.macrumors.com/2014/12/14/apple-holiday-ad-the-song/Apple headed over to court for E-Book appeal today - may hear a thing or two about it at some point. Worse case scenario - if all remains the same - they have to cough up $450 mln (chump change to them so not worth the focus for us IMHO) WSJ has the story - feel free to check it out - but truly not worth it: www.wsj.com/news/articles/SB22501900001083983765804580333103395594676?mod=rss_todays_us_nonsub_marketplace&mg=reno64-wsj&url=http%3A%2F%2Fonline.wsj.com%2Farticle%2FSB22501900001083983765804580333103395594676.html%3Fmod%3Drss_todays_us_nonsub_marketplaceAnd a second article also from the WSJ as to why AAPL should win it's E-Book appeal: www.wsj.com/articles/george-priest-apple-should-win-its-e-book-appeal-1418600640?ru=yahoo?mod=yahoo_itpI know since84 gets back at some point tomorrow but I don't know if he will be able to start the thread. I CANNOT tomorrow - we have an early doc appt. - so if you see that since84 has not started it, please be kind enough to do so. Really appreciate it! Money - can we please make some today?! - Enjoy your day!

phoebear Thanks for opening the thread with news synopsis.
The FUD machines are gearing up. The Ebook, iPod and Canada cases along with the new magnetgate vs monster earnings. A veritable cage grudge match, ala the WWF. Bulls vs Bears smackdown.

Great opening post Phoebes. You and Since84 both do the rest of us a great service...and it's appreciated.
Well, I'm sure I'm not the only star fleet Captain who was wiping away a tear when seeing the new Apple ad The Song for the first time. My father married my mother on December 5 1941. He had been an ROTC captain in college and was then teaching school. He was called to active duty on December 10th. They parted on December 20th and he first flew a variety of aircraft from North Africa through d-day, she did not see him until August 1945. He was getting ready to head to the Pacific theater when Truman dropped the bomb.
During this almost four year period my mother got redacted letters and, because my dad had eventually moved from the 8th Air Force into OSS and Army Intelligence, he did recorded briefings on military progress, which she could hear from time to time. She used to tell us about wondering where he was, how he was, if he was alive. They barely knew each other. But they kept in touch as best they could. They had met at a tea dance and shared a love of music and that common love helped them keep their bond over such a distance.
Anyway, he came back in one piece...they were married for forty years before he passed. Five kids were produced....but after he was gone my mother used to pull out those old letters and phonograph letters with his voice to explain to the grandkids what that time was all about.
Sorry for the personal aside...go apple.

Ellioticians looking at $105.32 (but there is a range in there) - Mace are you in agreement on this? Again, this is what they continue to say is the "pull back" and not a new downtrend.

Short-term may be. Things look bad with the oil mess. I gave up, close all except LEAPS 17 position, got to protect gain, dropped from 120% to 100%. Still good but no longer outstanding. In any case, rather enjoy family time this Christmas than to have to worry about options. Take a vacation . See you next year.

This is rather positive on another crappy day. Not every judge is as biased or "self-motivated" as Madame Cote.
From an Appleinsider article:
"As hearings got underway on Monday, Judge Dennis Jacobs — one of three judges on the appeals panel — was seen as "openly hostile to the government's case," in a report by AFP. Jacobs appeared to doubt the government's case against Apple, and expressed his view that the iPad maker was taking on "predatory pricing" strategies by the dominant player in the e-book market, Amazon.
"What we're talking about is a new entrant who is breaking the hold of a market by a monopolist who is maintaining its hold by what is arguably predatory pricing," Jacobs reportedly said."

Great history, Red. What an amazing period in our country when Americans were all united. If your father was in the 34th Bombardment Group, most missions are listed online. My maternal grandfather was a waist gunner in the 8th Air Force, 34th BG. He was KIA'd on his last mission on the way to bomb a Tiger factory in Germany, 9/22/44. It was the largest bomber mission in the history of the world up to that day. My grandmother is still alive and well at 93. C'mon AAPL!

It was the largest bomber mission in the history of the world up to that day. My grandmother is still alive and well at 93. C'mon AAPL! I don't post often but couldn't resist responding to the last two posts about WWII and fathers/grandfather's service and sacrifice. I love history, especially that period of American history and hearing and recognizing real stories of sacrifice. In support of how united the country was about the war effort at that time and probably like no other time in our history, there was no automobile production from February 42 to October 45. Nothing, nada, not one car, not one truck, not even a car part for the after market. Think about that- nearly 4 years without automobile production. The plants were producing nothing but tanks, jeeps, military trucks and other wheeled equipment. That is all they did. I recall my parents who are both passed now talking about life during WWII and how everybody just made do with they had. Somehow it worked for them. I can't help but wonder what would happen today with our society if that occurred again. Something tells me it would not be pretty. By the way, about to buy my first Apple computer for Christmas- the 5K. I have had numerous iPods, iPhones and iPads but never a Mac. I am going to cut the PC cord- fed up with freezes, slowness and general pain in the ass douchebaggery from Windows. I am going to celebrate the purchase with a celebratory cocktail and toast AAPL and hopefully saving an hour a day of my life due to PC fits and starts.

I bought more today.
The way AAPL is trading is awful. And it doesn't make sense. Lower oil prices should be a significant benefit for Apple, just as the holiday shopping is kicking into full gear. Strong dollar hurts EPS but overall the events of the last two weeks should be a boon for Apple. And yet it's down more % today than TSLA.

It isn't low oil prices, which are good for 95% of our economy, yes. It's the volatility. Sudden moves and loud noises scare the zebras. Whatever oil ends up stabilizing at, let it sit at that price for a week and see what happens. As for Apple, good time to buy common, even if this isn't a bottom. Lots of profit-taking and tax-related sales. But I wouldn't want to be short AAPL come the next earnings release. The irrational market is behaving irrationally towards the best company on earth. What can you do with total dumbshits like Dan Nathan babbling nonsense on TV every day? You just have to ride it out, and call him a dumbshit when he is wrong yet again when AAPL hits 143. Man that guy needs a groinpunch.

I picked up a few more shares today at the open. Grrr, missed the eventual dip (tea leaves, standard "wait until 11:30am" should have applied. Oh well.) Happy holidays, all.
No Apple stuff in my future, as I'm once again unemployed. We'll see what happens in January. Probably an iPhone 6 for my bride and maybe one for me. Does anyone know if I can purchase an unlocked AT&T version? Or have the Apple Store sell us an unlocked T-Mobile, and have AT&T store register it?

If you buy the T-Mobile version from the Apple Store online (at full price), you can put your AT&T sim in the phone and it just works. You don't have to visit the Apple Store.

Capt. Obvious advice - just stay calm and try not to do too much. Yeah, the following is terrible market logic (particularly in the context of all the other above-market-multiple stocks), but if you look at it as "AAPL from 75 to 120 this year", it's not COMPLETELY insane. Not that I agree, but we've been through this before. There's opportunity hidden somewhere.
And yes, I'm fully aware the better measuring point is 100 or so from 2012.

The only comfort I take is that this is not AAPL specific whatsoever - this has everything to do with the market in general - but this too shall pass. I just need to be nimble with my options positions.
It could be worse - glass is half full - I could be Russian and have rates raised to 17% right now.

I resemble that remark!
You're right JD...funny you should say that. Today I complained to my husband and he pulled up an old email from me from just a few months ago saying that I was so happy our account had grown so nicely and we should get out .... meanwhile we didn't....we made more ... and I'm still complaining. G-A-W-D ...I just hate it when he's right!!!!!

The rest is just filler.
