Good morning everyone. AAPL is GREEN, trading at 112.00 +0.11 (0.10%) at 6:39. Time to break into song? Perhaps not. We've pulled back a bit from last nights post-Carl run up and major indices are all RED at this early hour. In the news: Late yesterday afternoon a Judge dismisses lawsuit over allegedly faulty Apple MacBook logic boards. Mark Rogowska has an interesting analysis at Forbes Apple's Big-Screen Debut Is A Blockbuster, Cook Should Direct A Sequel. While I disagree with his conclusion that Apple should take the iPhone downmarket to increase market share his analysis is pretty good food for thought... Everything else is a rehash this morning. Have a great day -- It would be fun to outdo yesterday. Let's make money.

Digitimes: "Samsung reportedly grabs processor orders for Apple Watch"
Samsung Electronics' 28nm process technology has reportedly obtained orders for the Apple Watch set for launch in March 2015. The orders call for 3,000-4,000 12-inch wafers monthly, according to industry sources.
The processor built by Samsung will be inside Apple's S1 system-in-package (SiP), which also consists of mobile DRAM, NAND flash and other peripheral chips. Advanced Semiconductor Engineering (ASE) is reportedly the provider of SiP modules for the Apple Watch.
In fact, analysts' forecasts for Apple Watch shipments have been revised downward to as low as around 10 million units in 2015, the sources observed. However, analysts are more optimistic about sales of second-generation Apple Watch with improved software and better features.
Samsung and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) with their respective 1Xnm FinFET process technologies are expected to be in the race for orders for the second-generation Apple Watch, the sources noted.

I don't get it - why the hell does AAPL involve them in any way, shape or form!? WTF is wrong with them? ugh

Last night Horace Dediu published a fascinating piece at Asymco The Monopolist. At the risk of stealing Horace's thunder, it concludes: “Great companies don’t have any competition.”
Great companies are “monopolists of customer trust” and are unaffected by alternatives. They are positioned on and nailing the job their products and services are hired for. The alternatives must not only duplicate the exact job (which they almost never do), but they must also overcome the switching costs. The whole article is worthy of your time.

Off the highs violently don't see anything news related. What happened?

These fab services are not a commodity, and the candidates to deliver at volume are few and far between. I think we just need to trust Apple management that they know what they are doing when they make these choices. Plus who knows if the story is even true anyway.

Remember phoebear, this is Digitimes.
I wish pats were here but it IS decently common knowledge that smaller nm process = higher power efficiency. 28nm is last year's tech. A8 uses 20nm.
That aside I am OK with Apple using the fab that can produce what it requires. That requires BIDDERS and COMPETITION. Guess who is now ranked #2 in tech from its previous #1 perch and may not realize it yet?
Willing partner to supply chips for good deal to bolster its overall flagging business it will be.

Better to leave Samsung with something to lose maybe? A desperate competitor with nothing to lose is far more dangerous. Ask Dell. You were asking about Pats Mav. He just posted this in Braeburn. His quoted sources in bold.

The AP "Economics Writer" buried the lede: A record 92,898,000 Americans 16 years and older did not participate in the labor force last month, according to data released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. If everyone stops looking for work, unemployment will reach 0%, woo-hoo!

And here I thought you would take the Mitch McConnell approach and say that employers were hiring because they think the new Republican control of Congress will spur the economy. Your analysis is so last year!

Apple is bouncing all over the place....the tick is crazy. Up ten cents, down 15... People closing out positions and rolling?
Where is the order in the universe? I hear the siren song of $111.99

Thanks BillH!
If you could ask pats for me: why is an advanced (?) 28nm process better than a 20nm one? You'd figure Apple would want the smallest fab processes possible for Apple Watch.
