One of the comments on the ResearchKit Article rang true... earlier in the year I thought Pay was going to be the most significant thing Apple released this year. Pay looks better than ever, but ResearchKit blows it away in terms of potential impact on humanity. No wonder I'm bullish on Apple. Can anyone say 2 Trillion? Might as well set our sites high.

Back down to Earth, Horace Dediu posted an interesting context piece at Asymco last night, Peak Cable. I always enjoy reading Horace's thoughts.

I am one of Apple's biggest fans, but right now they could really use some real competition and if someone overtakes them in Enterprise, then they deserve what they get. We have been on the App Store for over two years now. Apparently all the while we have been in violation of a rule that does no harm to them whatsoever. We are in active dialog with the App Store team to resolve the issue and doing everything they ask. We think we now comply, but their arbitrary deadline has passed, and we find ourselves thrown out of the store, which could kill our company. While we wait for them to approve our revised app which they have had for almost a week. Until now we have been exclusive to iOS and we have driven lots of purchases of Apple devices into large corporations. Android, here we come. Enough is enough. This is not the first time they have been total assholes, but it is certainly the most damaging.

Lstream I gather you have elevated this to the highest of levels. I would like to think everyone there does their job well and efficiently but guess what - they are human so I am sure someone is screwing up. Speaking of "screwing up" - TC encouraged folks to reach out to him when the company does so ..... why not email HIM?! He seems like a man of his word.

I guess this is slightly off topic, but something strange happened the other day and I was wondering if anyone else might have had the same experience. It has to do with how we are being targeted by Goole and ISP's, so stop reading now if this is of no interest.
I was thinking about long term care the other day and realized that the cost of living in assisted living and waiting for noon to see if we were going to have tapioca pudding was just about as expensive as continuously cruising the world on a cruise ship. I looked at a few sites to compare itineraries and costs. It turns out that it was slightly more expensive if you got the cheapest cabins. I may still do it, but here is the strange thing....later that day I got my mail and there were three catalogs from cruise ship lines. At least one of them was from a site I had visited. I am pretty sure that it was later in the same day that I had checked, certainly no later than the next day.
Co-incidence? I have never been on a cruise ship. I have had no prior dealings with any of these companies. Given that the U.S. Postal service can take several days to deliver a first class letter, can they really get junk mail delivered in the same day? Has anyone else had a similar experience with this link between browsing and junk mail happening this fast?

Thanks, but we will follow protocol for now. I don't want to ruffle feathers just yet, when they have all the power. But the damage has been done. They have turned us from Apple evangelists into Android proponents. I don't like android and what it stands for, but I don't appreciate how Apple has kicked a loyal developer straight to the nuts, when we have done everything they asked. Their original ask is already going to make our product harder to use for our customers. Their demands are simply unbelievable. We are being forced to remove customer help links to our web site, because they think it could be used to sell subscriptions. Which is not true. So Apple is forcing us to change OUR Web site. And by the way, they are suggesting that we use in app purchases when that business model makes zero sense. Of course they would get 30% of the revenue that they completely do not deserve if we did this. We don't make money from the apps. It is from a much larger Enterprise solution, that we have spent millions creating. Thousands of companies have the exact same model as we do. I wonder if they are next.

The distribution channel is completely separate and they way things are done in this business. Go get a WebEx client. It simply extends WebEx to iOS users. Cisco does not pay Apple. I know that for sure. We are doing exactly what all kinds of other companies are doing.

FYI a while back I was having a major issue with Aperture, tried going thru all the normal channels with no joy. Eventually e-mailed Tim a short note with some screen grabs to illustrate my point. Two days later got a call from someone at Apple Corp Exec Relations and very soon thereafter was talking to the Aperture Team directly they lead me thru some steps e-mailed me some software and my issue was quickly resolved.

Haptic tech opens the door to many new things...fascinating... www.wired.com/2015/03/apples-haptic-tech-makes-way-tomorrows-touchable-uis/?mbid=social_twitterIf you’re into magic tricks, stop by an Apple Store and park yourself in front of a new 13-inch MacBook Pro. Click around on the trackpad for a while. Voila! That’s the trick: It’s not actually clicking. The illusion is one of Apple’s latest innovations: the Taptic Engine. Relying on a technique pioneered in research labs 20 years ago, it uses an electromagnetic motor to trick your fingers into feeling things that aren’t actually there. The motor’s precisely tuned oscillation makes it feel like you’re depressing a mechanical button, when you’re really just mashing your finger against a stationary piece of glass. I tried it at the Apple Store, and to call the effect convincing is an understatement. Within seconds, I was hunched over the machine like a lunatic, scrutinizing the trackpad from inches away, utterly convinced I was feeling a real click even though I knew there wasn’t one. And..... iMovie’s Bumpy Pixels Could this very simple and very clever electromagnetic motor produce effects other than a fake click? “Most definitely,” Hayward says. In theory, the trackpad should be capable of yielding all sorts of illusions—clicks, indentations, holes, bumps, and other types of bas relief-like textures. Apple showed its eagerness to explore this potential earlier this week, with an incremental upgrade to iMovie that adds haptic feedback for a handful of interactions. As explained in the release notes, “When dragging a video clip to its maximum length, you’ll get feedback letting you know you’ve hit the end of the clip. Add a title and you’ll get feedback as the title snaps into position at the beginning or end of a clip. Subtle feedback is also provided with the alignment guides that appear in the Viewer when cropping clips.”

I am pretty sure that it was later in the same day that I had checked, certainly no later than the next day. It's probably like buying a new car, and suddenly seeing your car everywhere. Probably just coincidence. Can't see them putting all those pieces together, unless you were already in the databases and they were really desperate. We sailed with Princess around the world. This is their 50th year, and they are pushing all kinds of specials and promotions, hard. Just like Viking flooded the market last year (prior to announcing open-ocean ships this year, double whammy marketing genius for them), Princess is pushing so hard it seems like a relaunch of the brand. The only other player we get anything from is Disney, who sees competition heating up and doesn't want to lower their margins. The full-time retired and cruising crowd are out there and the numbers are growing. We met a few. Swing by www.cruisecritic.com and search the forums if you are interested in the mechanics. Here is a fun article about an 86-year old who has done it for the last 7 years. It works out to around $450 per day or $13.500 per month. Our porthole suite was only $400/day for two people, so her cabin is probably a bit nicer (or she pays double rate but has a single cabin). To steer cruise talk back to Apple, my wife and I ended up teaching "iPad for Seniors" classes. The biggest issues were with anything tied to the internet. Shipboard internet is way beyond "last mile", but Apple's ecosystem requires internet to phone home for updates, app downloads, and myriad things. Now, imagine coaching your grandparents through wifi logon, then satellite logon, then email server logon, in the browser window of an iPad Mini. Rinse and repeat for another 1.500 eager users who were all over 65. All of whom had the iPad configured ashore by their kids, then sent around the world for 105 days without passwords. We took to hiding in the gym and drinking heavily. Hey, it's Friday - bar's open? Edit: and if I had to price-shop for tapioca pudding vs three gourmet meals (plus buffet in-between times), nightly entertainment, and a constantly changing view, you know where I'd put my pounds, dirhams and dollars.

Hmm, solar eclipse, supermoon, spring equinox, and quadruple witching day (expiration of index futures, index options, single-stock futures and single-stock options), what could go wrong?

Hmm, solar eclipse, supermoon, spring equinox, and quadruple witching day (expiration of index futures, index options, single-stock futures and single-stock options), what could go wrong? I'm calling it. There will be a move up at 2:14 P.M. Eastern Daylight Time. (Note: The above statement is not intended to be taken as investment advice. Do not rely on it. If you do rely on it and it works, the author expects to share in your gains. Losses are your own problem because nobody can forecast the markets...unless it works. Do not drink before investing at 2:14; do not operate a motor vehicle while investing at 2:14.)

I BTFD last night and a bit this morning.
The news of Apple entering the living room in a more serious way will be making the rounds on the internet over the weekend. Dumb asses in the media need to ponder their naval to figure out what this means.
WS wants to dream? Ok. iCar. iTV. ResearchKit. HomeKit.
These are far, far better dreams than Amazon's fruitless non-profit enterprise, which may very well turn into a nightmare for Bezos (and AMZN's bagholders).

Off Topic completely, but the mention of cruises forces me to mention the Star Clippers CruisesHighly recommend the Royal Clipper, my better half and I spent a week in the Caribbean for our 25th. Very relaxing, only ~ 200 guests and a crew of over 100. Sail @ night, take excursions if you like each day. Most islands visited too small for the floating casinos (re: standard cruise lines) with multiple thousands of guests to descend upon the island. Mostly European guests with maybe 1/3 American. Waiting for AAPL to get to $200 and will spend a week or two on a Mediterranean cruise. And it is GREEN, sail power for the win. AAPL ALL TIME HIGH
