Overseas markets and US futures slightly red after yesterday's run. AAPL slightly (and I do mean slightly) green...pretty much unchanged. Nothing much in news other than Apple detailing a secure 'touchless' e-wallet strategy in a patent filing...here is the AI article link if you want to browse: appleinsider.com/articles/14/01/16/apple-details-secure-over-the-air-e-wallet-strategy-in-patent-filingIn the yearly top 100 Companies to work for put out by Forbes this morning, AAPL is not on that list. Do they not participate? ..... because I find it incredulous that if they did they wouldn't be on it.

Regarding Apple and Nest, I'm reminded that Apple didn't buy Rio to revolutionize the MP3 player industry. They instead bought Sound Jam MP, which provided the back-end protocol to integrate ANY of the available MP3 players. Apple builds *hardware* to extract high margins by targeting luxury and aspirational buyers with life-enhancing software, or doesn't enter the space. Instead of Nest, Apple should be targeting www.z-wave.com, a mesh back-end protocol to integrate ANY home automation system. There are other protocols out there too like x10 and Zigbee and Insteon, plus open integration technologies like Wifi, BlueTooth, WiMax and the like. Honeywell, Nest (Google) and others are in the home, hospitality and corporate automation space, many with decades of experience and technology development. What can Apple do to solidify "one device to rule them all" as they did with iPod? I keep coming back to this video from 2007 about the UMPC vision. We are soooo clooose to a reality that looks like this video... www.youtube.com/watch?v=HrzeiUvDZog&list=FL3T0EBGRPRufMd_6urKSWzQ&index=27

This will be an interesting day....let's see if an early dip below 555 is bought or if OE begins to drag us back,
In all events, we have our legs for next week I think!

On 12/20 AAPL closed about $549, on 12/22 (Sunday) Apple and China mobile announce a deal is reached and AAPL goes up to about $560 and peaks about $572 a few days later.
Now we sit at about $553. Very frustrating.
As mentioned above, need to chew through the Jan 14 calls. Next week reclaim the $570s.

As expected, yesterday was another 1-day-wonder BS! But hey, we'll take it. 550 is better than 520.

Any strategic ideas going into earnings? I have been long APPL for what seems like generations, but earnings are so often difficult to endure, with tremendous revenue generated by Apple, then what is perceived like unexciting prospects going forward, which temporarily tanks the stock. More FUD yesterday, with one analyst saying it's all well and good that Apple landed CM, but he was concerned about what Apple had to give up in terms of profit margins to get that contract. It never ends!

The fact AAPL is down $3 and trading in a relatively narrow (for AAPL) range of $5 on low volume bodes well. The FUD is not taking...

AAPL is behaving very well considering the more recent and probable call wall at 555. Clearing out all the January leaps ( including mine at 620 and 650 ) will help add focus next week.
I now think we do get a CM number on Monday ....Sunday our time....and it will be from CM and it will be heady stuff...
The announcement suits their purposes....more than Apple's at this point in time..

I have this ominous feeling that the 1.2/1.4 million units pre-order versus the "millions" comments in the interview yesterday is somehow going to get so damn convoluted/misquoted that someone will write the (you know it's coming) FUD article to rain on our parade on Monday.

Very minor pullback in the grand scheme of things.
I said at the start of the week I would be ecstatic if we finished the week as high as $550, and so far I am indeed very happy. The bad memory of last years $500 Jan Option expiry is still fresh in my mind, and I'm very glad to see that a lot of LEAPs are going to finish in the money tomorrow.
Congrats to anyone who picked up Jan $500 calls in the middle of the year when we were hovering around $400.
Here's to seeing $600+ within the next two weeks!

I'm not sure there is any way someone could describe 1.2 million preorders as disappointing is there? Numbers surrounding the china mobile preorder amount: - With 3,000 retail stores (ignoring online), that equals 400 phone preorders per store. - Those 3,000 retail stores cover an average of 400,000 people each. - Those 3,000 retail stores cover an average of 255,000 China mobile subscribers each. - With 1.2 billion population, approximately 1 in 1000 people preordered an iPhone on China mobile, or 0.1% of the population.

AS I understand it: the 1.2/1.4 million units pre-order was without a certain price. IMHO: it measured initial interest. The FINAL price seems rather high.

Nest products themselves are all controllable with an iOS device for instance, with their thermostats having wifi built in and being able to be controlled via an iOS App from anywhere.

Apparently China Mobile subsidies are about what Unicom/Telecom's were in September for the 5S launch. They've since increased them AFAIK.

I think ZWave is an alliance of manufacturers. Not sure if there would be any way to buy it. Nest may even be a member.

Here you go: Wedge Predicts 500K China Mobile iPhone Sales on 1.2M Pre-Orders"Writes Zhang, actual sell-through of those pre-orders, in his view, will end up being less than the pre-order number, perhaps just half a million" ...and the beat[-down] goes on.

What time can we expect vids and pics of CHL stores being pelted with eggs and assorted produce for not having enough supply on hand?

Nice work Mav, but I'm gonna help you cut to the chase. The numbers you want are $14.98, and 895 million shares.....
