The lady or the tiger, so to speak? For fun I picked a door, but before that I picked a red-shirted ensign (metaphor for "what little cash I can afford to lose on a kinda-speculative quick trade") to open it and report back to me about next Monday.

Is it possible that part of the $3.2B could be an equity position for Mr. Iovine?

Good point. Using shares reduces the need for spending cash.

Mav - I just got back on and saw your question re:Rule 10b-18 (corporate stock repurchases). The company cannot be in the market during the last ten minutes of the day so anything happening midday could be anything - including the buy back. Was there a large purchase today? Do you know if it was executed on the bid side or ask side of the market?

I have no idea about any of that stuff. Someone did point out an interval (around 11AM or so?) where 1.1M shares were traded. Very unusual volume.

I believe the Company can't buy on a plus tick but only on a zero-plus or a downtick ... in other words (or said another way) , they can be out there supporting their stock but they can't be out there bidding up their stock. Let's see what the newspapers carry on this BEATS acquisition this weekend. And by the way JD, your earlier comments about rappers could not have been more spot on. It was very well said. Ah... but you already know how eloquent you are, my dear!

First Mav equates a flyer trade as a 'red shirted ensign' then JD chuckles at the 2:14 algorithm. You both remind me of Ferenghi slime worm merchants!

The new acquisition, assuming it goes through, looks like the most innovative action apple has taken in several years. I'm inclined to think it is a good idea that will shake up the Apple culture in new and unforeseen ways. It will be interesting to see it all play out. I doubt that Samsung or Microsoft would ever have taken this kind of risk.

I believe the more current version is the "do it for the Vine" deal.

Supposedly Beats gear is spurned by audiophiles, so maybe not a surprise the headphones don't show up anywhere on that chart. (Whoops. mace was right)

Beats aren't good headphones. They're a gimmick endorsed by kids' favorite artists. This deal doesn't seem to be motivated by the hardware though. Apple could make a better pair of headphones in a month.

I just watched a few interviews with Iovine and he has tons of Charisma , more then Cook , Schiller ,Federighi and Cue combined.. I would love to see him join and get involved in the Keynotes and content negotiations..
There must be a joke somewhere with the I ovine name..

If Iovine has such charisma, it is possible that he won over Cook and his staff and inked a deal that benefits Beats more than AAPL.

Brisk traffic at my Apple store today with iPhone trade-ins. Let's hope for another iPhone sales surprise in July. Our company uses Iphones. I emailed the trade in article yesterday to about two dozen people who, under our corporate policy, still have Iphone 4 or 4s. Our internal rule is you can't upgrade a company device unless you pay for it or the Gods of IT finally get around to doing so, which is usually after at least three years of use. We still have 3GS in the system, having been handed down. This has led to occasional "oops" events with older devices, which have become accidently and mysteriously damaged in hopes of corporate replacement with a newer model. This doesn't always work, as the poor victim of the "accident' may get a hand me down from a more senior person, who gets the newest model. Anyway, I have heard back from four co-workers today who intend to hustle into the Apple store next week and upgrde to new 5s's at basically free....which is o.k. under Company policy and makes everybody happy.

They won't pay $199 to upgrade to a new-gen base model iPhone after 2 yrs? Trade-in programs have been ongoing since September, too. I mean, a 4S is a fine phone but unless you're a super-light user, the 5S is so superior it's not even funny.

My company, and i know there are others like it, keep PCs for five years plus, printers until they grind to a halt, and phones.....handed down, down, down until the last person on the company plan gets something. I agree its nuts, but part of it is status and rank. Sure, some have upgraded in the past but the current deal is a neat way for everybody to end up with a better device at basically no cost.

@beatsbydre has over 500,000 followers. I wonder how many they had Wednesday night.
