This paranoid option trader is wondering if the 80 million iPhone order leak 18 hours before earnings release is a clue that Apples earnings for the last Q might not meet Wall Streets expectations. I'm loving the news and what it implies for AAPL stock price 6+ months out, but am wondering if there are going to be some FUD knee jerk reactions that will create optimal buying moments....like after an earnings release that happens right before the mother of all product release cycles...

Trippy Dippy will likely get a new guest spot on CNBC to say the 80M iPhone rumor was timed because Apple is going to miss. It's utter nonsense, unless the analyst who wears a beard in lieu of clown makeup is someone you like and respect. I do think Luca and Tim care about WS' reaction to earnings call but not to the level they're complicit with this kind of hi jinx. Apple can miss and/or fade with a decent report; Tim and Luca planting stories in the WSJ won't stop that. For short term options to justify the risk: Apple needs a big beat. PED updated everyone's WAGs today. fortunedotcom.files.wordpress.com/2014/07/screen-shot-2014-07-21-at-9-21-23-pm.png

Love the retro color Apple logo in the Air ad.
And yes, they're right -- love the Air, too.

Guys. Always a lot of noise around earnings. Remember - from today to apples next earnings announcement in Oct - apple is historically bullish. Here are the price per share pct increase stats over the last 5 years.
Plan accordingly.
Jul - Oct: (5 up) 2013 = +24.46% 2012 = +1.43% 2011 = +12.04% 2010 = +26.26% 2009 = +25.32%

I've been burned enough times trying to front run earnings that I feel like I'm in some sick parody of Charlie Brown kicking the football only to have Lucy pull it away every time and he ends up missing it and lying on his back on the ground. Trying to convince myself to follow our sage leader lovemyipad's advice...I will not front run earnings, I will not front run earnings, I will not front run earnings.

If I get time, I'll dig into it...not sure I'm going to have time today....

The above data was calculated by taking the closing price day of earnings for both july and oct dates and calculating the net pct increase in between. Simple but very strong info.

Curious that September 2012 marked the stock's ATH, yet the increase is only 1.43%. For anyone looking for patterns with high/low, look at the stock history for the time period.
This year, we get a new product category, unlike 2009 - 2013. Also, Apple will make 70M iPhones for the December quarter, a 40% increase over last year.

VERIZON: Wireless Operational Highlights Verizon Wireless added 1.4 million retail net connections, all of which were postpaid, in the second quarter. These additions exclude acquisitions and adjustments. At the end of the second quarter, the company had 104.6 million retail connections. This includes 98.6 million retail postpaid connections, a 4.6 percent increase year over year. Verizon Wireless had 35.2 million retail postpaid accounts at the end of the second quarter, up 0.7 percent over second-quarter 2013, and 2.80 connections per account, up 3.7 percent year over year. During second-quarter 2014, the company added 304,000 postpaid phone net additions and 1.15 million postpaid tablets. At the end of the quarter, smartphones accounted for nearly 75 percent of the Verizon Wireless retail postpaid customer phone base, up from 72 percent in first-quarter 2014. This was also the third straight quarter of company-record net additions for tablets. Retail postpaid churn was 0.94 percent in the second quarter, down 13 basis points sequentially and up 1 basis point year over year. Retail churn was 1.25 percent in the second quarter, down 12 basis points sequentially and up 2 basis points year over year. The company continued to enhance its 4G LTE smartphone lineup. In the second quarter, Verizon Wireless launched the Samsung Galaxy S 5 and ATIV SE, the Lucid 3 by LG and the HTC One (M8). The company also launched the Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 8.0 tablet and announced the Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 10.1 and Galaxy Tab S. Earlier this month, Verizon Wireless launched the Sony Xperia Z2 tablet and the LG G3 smartphone. During the second quarter, Verizon Wireless continued to add capacity to its 4G LTE network, the largest in the United States, using AWS spectrum. The additional bandwidth, called XLTE, is now available in more than 350 markets across the country. www.verizon.com/investor/news_verizon_delivers_sixth_consecutive_quarter_of_doubledigit_operating_income_and_earnings_growth_07222.htmfrom the earnings call: So when you consolidate all of this with the excellent tablet growth quarter we had – and again, I think tablets are extremely good for the industry, not just for Verizon. And from an industry perspective, I think everybody will see the same thing that says, these tablets are lower subsidy, they reduce churn in the account level. So we see that when someone has a tablet in the account, their churn is lower than the overall churn of a normal customer base. This device drives incremental revenue from an access standpoint. But more importantly, I think, and I’ll give you a data point here, these 4G tablets drive more usage on the network than a 3G smartphone. So when you consolidate that into an account level pricing arrangement, customers buy up because they’re using more data. So this is all good. seekingalpha.com/article/2330125-verizon-communications-q2-2014-results-earnings-call-transcriptI think this may change in the future. AS I understand, when IOS8 and Yosemite are fully implemented with CONTINUITY; there will be no need for cellular iPads.

So there appear to be no hidden minefields in the data from Verizon, China Mobile or China Telecom. Rather, one could read good things into most of this growth and expansion...
One can hope......

Two OT items:
I have a better appreciation for why Apple chose "Mavericks" for its OSX. A great movie is now on HBO called "Chasing Mavericks" Surfs up!
For those who have Philips HUE lights, I HIGHLY recommend Philips' newest product called "Tap." It's a remote that hangs on the wall without wires or batteries and controls your Hue lights. It just landed at my Apple store yesterday. No more fussing and delay with turning lights on and off with your iPhone/iPad.

Being that this is Luca's first ER as CFO, he might surprise everybody with spectacular numbers with a "new" style of reporting. You know, they can present numbers in many creative ways... Just thinking out loud

I'm surprised we're not trading red today, given the "FUD" that Apple will build 80M iPhones. Or that Apple announced a deal with IBM. More news like this and Apple will be out of business in 60 days! /s

Please allow me a moment before earnings to comment on the wonders of Chipotle. For some of the members, it's Wall Street's love affair with Amazon or Google (or both) that drives them up the wall. It does for me as well. But when I witness buyers flocking to Chipotle today, driving the price up almost $77 ( 13.18%), to over $667/share, I just have to wonder about the fundamental appeal of investing in a company that serves burritos instead of a company that provides wonderful, innovative hardware and software. Thanks for letting me vent. I'm better now.
