So I'll be the first to ask this, what the FUCK took them so long to give us this cash news? Total bullshit. Absolutely inexcusable to drag their feet this long. And whether this is true or not, this release gives the appearance that they knew earnings/guidance would not please WS and they wanted to cover that up with the cash announcement. hedge, really? This "coverup" of low guidance/bad earnings theory isn't a new one.

The buyback is disappointing. This tells me they expect earnings to be mediocre moving forward. Margin is down from last quarter which is also a big no no.
Macs were light as well.

If the stock goes down, they can buy back more shares. Win-Win.
So, with $60B they can buy back, about 1/6 of the company?

Profit umbrella, apparently iPad mini really is lower-margin, lower-margin iPhone mix?
Those are the three big reasons I can think of. We'll see what they say on the call.

Apple going aggressive on margin ... The transition continues. Is consistent with focussing on Services. Need a bigger market size than the affordability luxury segment of 10-15%. I think someone in Apple needs to explain this new direction or Shamesung would seize the narrative.

hedge, just wondering about the "surprise". I'd "worried" about that possibility since the late March "window" for a cash conference passed us by.

Agree with both Sponge and hedge - the buyback IS disappointing and seriously, was this the best they could come up with? It falls short - no wow in ANY of these numbers. Let's see if the conference call sheds more clarity....but it seems like this stock goes nowhere till after June from what I'm looking at.

First of all, they have a ton of cash. Second of all, at 9, 10, 11, or even 12 times, it's a great way to deploy capital. Third, if a great opportunity comes along in the next 32 months, they can simply suspend the buyback and deploy the cash (they'll still have plenty of it) on the great opportunity.

I expected the numbers. Sigh. But I'm pleased with use of cash.

Our GM this quarter is 37.5%, EVEN LOWER than the last quarter (38.6%)?!?!? What are they spending it on? New iPhone ramping up this summer's my only guess, unless there's a new product line coming out in the next month.

I was referring to the next 8 months.
Well WS likes the cash allocation. They have been complaining about that.
I now have a hard time seeing 700 by end of the year with these numbers.

I had just hoped they wouldn't do this. I am absolutely furious right now. More so than in January. TC gets the CC to convince me to keep my shares.

Not bad on the plan for divvy and cash...it's something! The GM is the ONLY thing that popped my estimate.I was close on all product metrics. This needs to be explained and explored....but talk about a second half story for 2013....Wow.

What do you want? A $200B buyback? If you get a dividend and buyback, you can't have a "dramatic" either. Also: www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/320193/000119312513167469/d525706dex991.htmWhat makes you think the program can't be expanded again? Seriously people. You want dramatic from Apple in terms of buybacks and dividends? This is a company that was a big zero on all fronts until the announcement on March 2012. You've had the wrong company from the beginning. How is that aspect surprising? Venting I can understand, expectations, no.

The guidance points to a late summer iPHone and iPad release. We will be going nowhere for the next 3 months. I now look forward to Oct.
That Apple TV may come out this year after all.

Wait for the Q&A, but Tim is likely to mention that the costs of moving away from Scamsung do not come cheap... And I am FINE with the cash plans. Really.

btw it was estimated earlier at 4.8m but AT&T confirmed, they did 4.8m activations, which brings them in at 80% of their smart phone activations being iphones.

I'm expecting a good conference call.
And Apple can more easily fix GM than it could soft iPhone and iPad #s. I feel really good Apple beat both my iPhone and iPad #s.

Just a well known quote, to remind us of a good reason why GM needed to come down, and why, at this critical juncture they have to go for market share by earning less per device...
