I'm assuming potential downside, but it isn't written that it must be. We'll see.

eyoonCNBC: Uh, oh. Apple event in Beijing may disappoint. Spokesperson says event here only a replay of CA. No China Mobile news.

I don't see the 5c as a disappointment others do having had time to consider the alternatives. The iPhone 5c is a BETTER iPhone than the iPhone 5 at the same price point (i.e. $100 less), with more color choices and the durability of polycarbonate. It's a brand new iPhone, folks. From ALL accounts, it has the build quality better than anything Samdung makes. Again, I'm confident Apple will sell all it can produce for the next two to three quarters.
CM is probably a delayed announcement (or at least availability). Apple has an exceptional upgrade in iOS7 (I know, I've been using it for 2+ months). The iPhone 5S is an outstanding improvement, running 64bit and a key fingerprint feature no one else has. The color choices are also better than the outgoing 5 model.
Open the bar early if you must, if that helps assuage Wall Street's irrational reaction to it. We KNEW Apple was going to be sold on any news.
People are better off being critical of the WS casino, unreliable press coverage and morons like Peter Misek, et al, than Tim Cook who actually has a track record (uh, just running the biggest company in the world).

We can agree on a lot of your points but Apple made a strong statement here about Margins vs Market Share, let's hope they are right this time around because they sure as hell were not in the 80's. I would NEVER buy a Samsung phone but I have plenty of friends and relatives who have them and I have to admit they are not bad. Yes Samsung can't innovate anything but they are pretty good thieves and the vast chasm between the two has definitely gotten smaller. BTW, I'm following the reporter mentioned above on twitter ... she has some poll results 86% of people say the 5C is too expensive. Not good.

Expectations were set for no CM news right away. Can the bears or whoever reset the narrative to fresh disappointment, we'll see.
Once again, Apple is Doomed for some, so I'll just have to avoid the barrage of hit pieces over the next several weeks. If anything, what bugs me most, but doesn't surprise now that I know what a beast the 5S is, is the initial supply constraints it'll probably have.

Take $100 off the price and I bet 75-80% would still say it is too expensive.

Whiskey Tango Foxtrot?!?!? Why would Apple execs brief these guys with false expectations?

"Not good" for prepaid-leaning Twitter respondents, sure.
Here's the question: How many of Apple's iPhone customers actually buy unsubsidized? If you don't know, you can't really gauge impact.
The other question: Is China Mobile in play? I think it is, but more verification is needed.

If they don't announce CM, then I've had it with gene Munster. How does a guy not only keep his job, but get so much cred. He has predicted Apple TV every 3 months for the past two years and it never has happened. He goes on cnbc and says 99% china mobile is happening in china now. So if it doesn't I will attempt to call him out. And be pissed about my buy in the low 490s today. Don't forget he also predicted there would be no Siri on the 5C.

Why are you so sure they will have a supply constraint ? Suddenly optimistic? It's obvious. No ordering PERIOD until the 20th for now. There is big demand but no way of preordering. Apple wouldn't put the window out at launch if it had enough to sell. Conclusion: A7 and/or sensor tech may be temporary holdups.

Maybe but take the 700 MILLION subscribers and if that additional 10% did NOT think it was too expensive you've just sold a LOT of phones. Bottom line ... Apple might be dead on with their strategy then again I lived this through the 80's and cheap won the day over quality ... I don't want to see that play out again.

Android phones don't tempt me in the least. The over saturated colors of OLED displays are complete non-starters.
Don't worry about surveys -- the phandroids see a win when someone else loses and vote accordingly. They're a vocal group, trolling Apple-centric sites to make themselves heard. Apple will have lines on September 20th that will reveal the truth behind demand for both handsets.

I'll order on Sept. 20th if I have a reasonable chance of getting it soon. Otherwise, I'll wait in line with my iPad 4 with 128GB of movies.

Take $100 off the price and I bet 75-80% would still say it is too expensive. That means 14% of them, representing 190 million chinese people, think its a good deal.

This is not the 80s. Apple has every ability to pull the "cheap iPhone" lever that it never had in the 80s. Sure Apple may crumble and die under the weight of ivory tower company philosophy. But that's a whole different story. Macs weren't insanely great after Steve left.

Let's summarize:
Almost every talking head on Bloomberg and CNBC are stating in varying ways that Apple laid an egg with today's phone event. Nothing new, too expensive, won't sell in China, Samsung is King, Apple will die like Nokia, RIM, and Motorolla, Cook is an idiot, etc.
The members of this board are fighting and calling each other names.
No China Mobile. No new category.
I think I'll wait a day or two and buy some bull spreads.

Whiskey Tango Foxtrot?!?!? Why would Apple execs brief these guys with false expectations? Gene clearly didn't get the memo on 5c pricing. As far as expectations for CM, we're the only ones talking about it here --it's not getting picked up elsewhere.

No China Mobile was actually expected, now it's a function of spin vs. facts. No new category, no one expected that. The bias doesn't look like up at the moment, yes.

What day did cheap actually win, when you look at the PC industry? It has been a crap business for the better part of a decade. Which of that pack of so called winners would you like to see Apple trade places with? I think this special Apple China event is a screw-up. They should have said in advance it was a replay. Instead they let expectations run wild again, and we get a great big egg. Not smart at all.

Alternative Summary of today: Pros: - Two new iPhones - both well received from a product perspective - One major new Carrier (NTT Docomo) - Biggest lineup of launch countries ever for iPhone - Cheapest entry level price on iPhone in China dropped $122 USD - Pricing Strategy on new iPhones likely positive for ASP & GM - iPhone 5C likely to accelerate marketshare growth in high subsidy markets - Apple announces leveraging of software assets (iWork & iLife apps) to make iOS products more attractive. Cons: - Pricing Strategy on new iPhone 5C being criticized by Media/Analysts who say it will not help gain emerging market marketshare. (not coincidentally most of these Media/Analysts made public predictions of the iPhone being below $399, and were wrong). - No China Mobile deal...yet Any additions?

I expect Android/Samsung to have a mid term challenge responding to the fingerprint sensor. Some real differentiation there. It makes the 5S a must-own for me.

Pros: - Two new iPhones - both well received from a product perspective - introduced a new innovation (Touch ID) thats hard to copy and also a very attractive feature for both consumers & enterprise. - One major new Carrier (NTT Docomo) - Biggest lineup of launch countries ever for iPhone - Cheapest entry level price on iPhone in China dropped $122 USD - Pricing Strategy on new iPhones likely positive for ASP & GM - iPhone 5C likely to increase accelerate growth in high subsidy markets - Apple announces leveraging of software assets (iWork & iLife apps) to make iOS products more attractive.
