Not sure what's so funny...is anyone here really dumb enough to believe there's no one smart that's worked for Microsoft? I'm sure there are many, many brilliant people there and Microsoft is one of the biggest Tech companies around. I know people Hate Microsoft because "they aren't Apple", but they had 8B in Net Income in 2004, today they're at over 22B. Yes, Apple is better...but I'd sure be happy if Apple tripled their income in 10 years. You're right, yet it is still funny. Brings a new meaning to the blue screen of death (re: just a joke). A little light hearted humor not an indictment of everything Microsoft or all it's employees.

It has occurred to me that there might just be the network announcement and then nothing else. But c'mon. "We're launching our new TD-LTE network with these partners!" makes tons more sense to me. BWDIK. Mercel, any of your friends/contacts in China know if there's real-time coverage of the CM partner conference? It's still still early there....will put up what I learn when they get up. Time uncertain for announcement, still. Odd.

I'm sure there are many, many brilliant people there and Microsoft is one of the biggest Tech companies around. Steven Ballmer being one of them. Ballmer got a perfect math score on the SAT, and graduated with high honors from Hahvahd. Lots of smart people at Nokia and Blackberry too. But as OMG Smartest President Evah has demonstrated, intelligence and actually getting one's head out of one's ass and being competent in a modern tech economy are not always correlative. Optically, I think a company whose culture is stuck in a 1990's business model might not have been the best choice. When you think, "wow, these guys represent the young, entrepreneurial, get-er-done, modern mobile tech mastery SV crowd," is MSFT really the company that comes to mind (yes I know they are in Redmond)? These guys just launched the fucking Surface for crissakes. To me, that represents the same, stubborn denial of reality plaguing Obamacare. It would be like Vitalogy80 saying, "my personality is perceived as being too harsh and humorless, so I am going to hire Appledoc as a life coach to make me warm and fuzzy."

LOL...good points, but a few counter points. A) They aren't hiring Microsoft...they're hiring someone who worked for Microsoft. Not everyone at Apple or Microsoft thinks the exact same way from the top down. He could have been extremely smart and forward thinking but trapped by the Microsoft machine. B) Can you imagine the level of bureaucracy that would be involved in that role...to try and get a forward thinker who can make the changes needed is going to need to be a patient person. I can only imagine how long it would take to get something done with all those levels of Government and Private Interests involved. It'd probably take 3 months to decide on what font to use for the website.

I thought the conference started at 8:45am local time with announcements of the new vendors around 9:45am, at least according to this link from China Mobile's website translate.google.com/translate?sl=auto&tl=en&js=n&prev=_t&hl=en&ie=UTF-8&u=http://dev.10086.cn/2013&act=urlThat give it around 4:45pm PST if my math is correct.

That was yesterday. I'm quoting from the exact same article: "Lenovo, Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo and Gionee-- as well as retailers and online platforms including Jing Dong, TMall, Suning, Gome and Dixintong." None of these count as "international players" (as in, companies headquartered outside China) AFAIK. Maybe China Mobile was telling the truth and negotiations were technically ongoing until yesterday, but perhaps yesterday was always set as the official date for signing the deal. I think, short term, we're going down. Either way. Deal - sell the news. No deal - pound it down. Priced in or not doesn't matter. I'd be happy to be proven wrong and have my insurance end up worthless.

Probably. Apple needs to go on 60 Minutes and talk about its own drone program.

If true, I hope Apple cuts an even better deal with China Telecom and China Unicom. I've had it with the Cat & Mouse carrier.

Still in negotiations. How much is this priced in? We'll find out tomorrow.

Unless the negotiations completely fall apart, the damage should only be short term if an agreement isn't immediately announced. So I'm not worried. Too much.

The translation suggests negotiations include making a variant of iPhone for China's 4g network, not for US. CM is hopeful to have it worked out by the end of the year. I can't vouch for the reliability here but it's clear iPhones won't be sold by CM tomorrow. We should have trusted the CM rep saying negotiations are continuing, as I posted over the weekend.
This is all I'm getting. The news isn't what we wanted and the details will filter out soon by more reliable sources. AAPL has traded flat since last Friday, so some of this is already priced in. CM is a Fscking tease, what with all the web postings and the rest.

WS is such a freaking kink job it could mean anything and some moron will still come out and say "price is truth."

Earnings it is, then?
Surprising that a publication like WSJ would whiff on a story like this.

Any sort of a move in AAPL based on this China Mobile disappointment would certainly move the nasdaq 100 futures here: www.cmegroup.com/popup/mdq2.html?code=NQH4&title=March_2014_E_mini_NASDAQ_100&type=p#link=5minBut it's actually higher right now at 9:30 ET than it was an hour ago, and higher than it was 3 hours ago as well. So either Wall Street doesn't care about this supposed negative CM news, or they're just slow to react and there's money to be made by shorting the NASDAQ 100 e-minis right this second. Personally, I think it's a non-event.
